The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the UK’s premier heritage railways carrying over 350,000 passengers per year with an annual turnover of around £8 million. Uniquely operations run over our own infrastructure and as a Train Operator over Network Rail.
We are seeking to appoint a new member to join our senior management team. Reporting to the CEO, this is a senior position, and the successful applicant is expected to be invited to become a member of the board of NYMR Plc. This role is critical in delivering safe, efficient and effective infrastructure and services to enable the safe operation of trains.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Prepare and support the development of outline and detailed design for a wide array of civil engineering projects.
2. Follow check and approve procedures throughout project delivery.
3. Ensure all assets are managed safely in line with the NYMR SMS and in a safe condition for creating a safe working environment for others at all times, ensuring safety procedures are adhered to at all times.
4. Ensure you work within NYMR sustainability, environmental, and mission and vision aims at all times.
5. Carry out inspections, site surveys and assessments of structures and prepare reports.
6. Lead the project management, planning, design, specification, control and implementation/commissioning of infrastructure works on the NYMR.
7. Ensure management and maintenance plans are developed for the infrastructure department appropriate for the needs of the business and ensure that adequate resources are in place for the carrying out of projects.
8. Responsible for the leadership and management of the permanent way, signalling, telecommunications and structures departments, including failure/defect reporting and rapid response arrangements, to ensure the integrity of the operational railway is maintained for the continued safe running of trains.
9. Oversee the design of civil and structural schemes and check designs prepared by others, including detailed calculations by hand or through computer models.
10. Liaise with engineers to verify project scope and ensure deliverables.
11. Preparation and technical approval of railway submissions in accordance with NYMR procedures and the relevant NYMR Company Standards.
12. Liaise and communicate within NYMR and external parties at meetings and in writing when required and attend site in varying locations to undertake surveys and inspections.
13. Where necessary, develop and coordinate and prepare documentation for the infrastructure department and where appropriate other disciplines you are managing.

Personal Specification:
1. Relevant Civil or Structural Engineering degree - essential.
2. Experience within the Heritage Rail sector with a structure bias and/or Civils industry - essential.
3. Chartered Engineer and member of a relevant professional body, e.g. ICE, PWI - essential.
4. 7 - 15 years' experience within rail industry - essential.
5. Considerable project management experience across buildings, bridges and temporary works, with drive and a proven record to meeting targets - essential.
6. Full driving licence and own transport - essential.
7. Strong commercial awareness - essential.
8. Strong technical knowledge within assessment and design including inspections, calculations and analysis of existing structures and new build design development - essential.
9. Maximising the efficiency of paid staff, contract staff, contractors and the numbers of volunteers deployed - desirable.
10. Experience leading and developing a team of Engineers - desirable.
11. Experience in carrying out the role of CRE-D for the specific discipline (experience of CEM role is desirable but not essential) - desirable.
12. Focused approach with effective interpersonal and communication skills - desirable.
