Job Title: School Caretaker
Location: Pontefract, WF9
Reports to: School Business Manager / Headteacher
Salary: £22,678-£27,269 per year (Pro-rated)
Working Hours: 7:00am-10:00am (3hrs a day)
Job Purpose:
To ensure the school site is well-maintained, clean, safe, and secure at all times. The caretaker will support the smooth running of the school by carrying out a range of caretaking, maintenance, and health and safety tasks.
Key Responsibilities:1. Site Maintenance and Security
* Open and close the school premises daily, including gates, buildings, and windows.
* Ensure security of the school premises including activation/deactivation of alarms.
* Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of buildings, fixtures, and fittings.
* Undertake minor repairs (e.g., changing light bulbs, fixing leaks, painting, etc.).
* Liaise with external contractors when necessary.
2. Cleaning and Hygiene
* Supervise cleaning staff and ensure high standards of cleanliness are maintained.
* Undertake emergency cleaning when necessary (e.g., spills, accidents).
* Ensure that outdoor areas (e.g., playgrounds, car parks) are clean and safe.
3. Health & Safety
* Monitor health and safety across the site and report hazards.
* Conduct regular safety checks (e.g., fire alarms, emergency lighting, legionella testing).
* Maintain appropriate records and complete compliance logs.
4. Facilities and Equipment Management
* Set up rooms for school activities and events (e.g., assemblies, meetings).
* Monitor stock levels of cleaning and maintenance supplies and re-order as needed.
* Manage heating, lighting, and water systems effectively and efficiently.
5. General Support
* Support staff and pupils during school hours as needed.
* Assist with deliveries and distribute supplies around the site.
* Undertake any reasonable duties requested by the Headteacher or Business Manager.
Person Specification:Essential:
* Previous experience in a similar caretaking or facilities role
* Good DIY and maintenance skills
* Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
* Awareness of health & safety and safeguarding practices
* Good communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable:
* Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrics, or carpentry
* Experience working in a school or educational setting
* COSHH and Manual Handling training
* First Aid certification

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
