The primary purpose of the role is to provide chair side clinical supervision for dental students treating patients in the Carlisle Dental Education Centre.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES (Educational)
1. Provide lectures, seminars, and tutorials in line with areas of expertise during the four-year course of study and participate in the educational assessment processes.
2. Participate in peer review and other quality and continuing educational and professional developmental activities.
3. Participate in the dental student admissions process, including face-to-face interviews.
4. Work collaboratively with the University, the Dental Education Centres in the Medical & Dental Collaborative, and other NHS and partner institutions.
5. Undertake other relevant duties commensurate with the level of the post as required.
6. Participate in the assessment of student performance related to clinical activity undertaken in the Centre.
7. Collaborate with full-time Senior Clinical Teachers and dental staff of the Specialist & Special Care Dental Service to enhance clinical teaching.
8. Screen patients and provide a limited amount of emergency access care.
9. Be part of a small team of clinical tutors, clinical supervisors, and dental nurses delivering high-quality, personalised training and education to UCLan dental students and dental therapy students.
10. Provide clinical supervision for students treating patients in the Dental Education Centre within the Carlisle Dental Centre.
11. Be responsible for assessing and approving clinical treatment plans formulated by dental students and assist in the management of subsequent clinical care.
12. Liaise with dental staff in the Carlisle Dental Centre to screen patients suitable for treatment by dental students.
13. Maintain quality assurance of teaching and ensure parity of the dental student experience.
14. Undertake an active role in maintaining records related to the progression of dental students and course evaluation.
15. Encourage dental students to develop a professional approach to their work and an understanding of ethics and professionalism appropriate to contemporary practice.
Responsibilities concomitant with the Senior Dental Officer grade
1. Undertake oral and dental examination and diagnosis as an essential component of assessing patients presenting at Dental outlets for both child and adult patients.
2. Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate interventions to prevent disease and promote health for individual patients.
3. Identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and lead the dental team in appropriate first-line management of such emergencies.
4. Use appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment.
5. Undertake appropriate assessment and investigations of patients to determine the need for specialist advice.
6. Communicate with a range of patients and their families on individual clinical issues and communicate with all members of the clinical team and peers appropriately.
7. Participate in the Dental Department’s Clinical Governance activity, including Critical Incident Meetings and Clinical Audit.
8. Take responsibility for the management of the immediate clinical environment and dental team.
9. Understand the legislative framework governing the delivery of oral health care in England.
10. Demonstrate the application of the principles of ethical behaviour relevant to dentistry.
11. Participate in the training of individuals on a local clinical basis.
12. Maintain accurate clinical and statistical records through the SOEL Health dental management program and other systems.
