Each of these settings caters for a wide range of learning need and disability, including autism and physical disabilities. We now have an opening for a part-time Speech and Language Therapist, working as part of our multi-disciplinary team based at Millie College, and working across our directorate at Victoria School, with potential remote working at Nash College. Livability Millie College is a post 16-25 education setting helping young people with a range of learning and physical disabilities in Dorset and the local area, bridging the gap between education and employment. It is a one-of-a-kind work environment, set on a 350-acre countryside site near Poole. The college s curriculum is directly aligned to its natural environment and the enterprise activities that operate there, including animal care, catering and retail, conservation and horticulture. Students are supported with personalised learning programmes which build confidence and independence, underpinned by a focus on wellbeing. Job Purpose To determine aims and objectives for the development of communication skills in line with students EHCPs in co-operation with education and therapy colleagues. To co-develop and deliver specialist programmes to enable students to access the curriculum and achieve their individual learning goals. To select vocabulary and manage the maintenance of low and high-tech communication aids used by individual students and to support and develop students functional use of communication systems within the college environment. To plan, lead and supervise communication sessions for groups of students. To act in an advisory capacity on communication and associated skills to be embedded in the college curriculum and educational provision. To offer support and ideas for the future development of the SaLT service with the aim of maintaining a high-quality service. Therapies at Millie College form part of the integrated delivery model, where therapies are functional, have purpose and demonstrate a meaningful benefit. Ensure therapies are needs-led, regularly monitored and integrated into the student's college day. To have collective responsibility for safeguarding all students and contribute to the safeguarding policies and procedures. Key Responsibilities To carry out a therapeutic programme of work alone and without direct supervision. To monitor student progress and recognise when to discuss any changes with the MDT Leader. To encourage students and other staff members in an active approach to developing communication and language. This requires empathy, sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills. Clinical Responsibilities To promote integration of Speech and Language Therapist treatment plans/programmes into care and education through example. To demonstrate and uphold exemplary clinical practice at all times, in own clinical caseload, including contemporaneous and accurate record keeping; maintaining awareness of HCPC guidelines. To monitor student progress and recognise when to discuss any changes with the MDT Team. To carry out assessments using various treatment skills to support students. This may include: working with the ACE Centre alongside the assessment and use of VOCAs ; understanding of the use of sign and Makaton/Singalong understanding the use of language skill development ; To plan and implement interventions, using various treatment skills, monitor progress and evaluate outcomes. To encourage students and other staff members in an active approach to developing communication and language. This requires empathy, sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills. To deliver assessment and report on student development for annual reviews. Expectations To have due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
