About the job Job summary The Army Headquarters is part of the Ministry of Defence and the top-level headquarters in the British Army. The Command Force Development Manager and Wargaming position sits inside the Army Futures Directorate, a fast-paced and exciting place to work. In Army Futures, our role is to help our Army win in the future. We do this by ensuring the Army keeps pace with social, political, technological, and environmental changes and the speed at which our adversaries adapt. We then drive research, innovation, analysis, and experimentation to decide how the Army should be structured, trained, and equipped, and how it should fight and operate in the future. The Command Force Development and Wargaming position forms a key part of the Army Strategy and Force Design team. The successful applicant will be working with the Defence Science Technical Laboratory (Dstl) and other industry partners to commission and design wargames and other experimentation to help the Army decide what the future force needs to be capable of, how it should be structured, and what capabilities it needs to meet the challenges of the future. As Command Force Development and Wargaming, you will be part of the team responsible for creating the blueprint for tomorrows Army - working to ensure that the Army of the Future can meet all of the challenges it will face. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Job description As the Command Force Development Manager and Wargaming, you will: Manage annual programme of Army Force Testing, wargaming, and Operational Analysis (OA) activities to test and evaluate operational concepts, force design, and modernisation options. Arrange and manage the execution of wargaming and OA, working closely with Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) other agencies, other Army HQ staff branches and Field Army Formation HQs. Coordinate support to, and participation in, Army Force Testing from partners including MoD, other TLBs, other government departments and multinational military forces. Lead generation, collation and exploitation of evidence from OA to support potential future Army Balance Of Investment decisions. Input OA reports into the Army Research Reports Repository (ARRR) and exploit the ARRR to provide evidence to advise Army strategic decision making. Manage the Army Strategy & Force Developments (Strat&FD) annual OA budget. Manage development of Methods, Tools and Data to prepare appropriate models to support anticipated Army OA requirements. Support and deputise for Assistant Head Strat&FD (Army Colonel) and SO1 Force Testing (Army Lt Col) where required, including attending relevant meetings in the UK and abroad if required. This role is suitable for hybrid working (part office/part working from home) and flexible working hours (flexible start and finish times subject to business need). The successful candidate would be expected to spend an average of two to three working days each week in the office. The post requires Security Clearance (SC). Whilst there is no current need for the post holder to hold Developed Vetting (DV), there is a chance that this might be required in the future Person specification Essential skills and experience: An interest in (and ideally some experience of) wargaming. Experience of working in a technical role with exposure to; automation, security, weaponry, DDaT/communication systems or sensory equipment Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. The ability to convey sophisticated information clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing. The ability to engage with and influence a wide range of collaborators. Desirable skills and experience: Experience of military wargaming as a developer. Project management experience. Good working knowledge of the Armys organisation and operational planning processes.
