The role
Emanuel School is seeking a well-qualified Teacher of Classics to become a key member of our teaching community, supporting students to fulfil their full potential in Latin and Classical Civilisation.
As a Teacher of Classics, you will plan, prepare and deliver engaging Classics lessons across the school, creating a challenging and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate pupils to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others, and perform to the best of their abilities.
As well as delivering excellent classroom teaching, all staff at Emanuel undertake a pastoral role (as a form tutor, or as a co-tutor if an ECT) and get involved in the wider life of the school through co-curricular activities and outreach programmes.
We are looking for someone with good subject knowledge, seeking to develop their skills and experience at a leading independent school. You will need a strong Classical Languages degree, along with a proven track record of teaching Classics at secondary level. We also welcome applications from ECTs.
The Classics Department
The success of the Classics Department at Emanuel School is down to the combination of specialist teachers with a deep knowledge and love of their subject and motivated pupils with high aspirations.
Classical Civilisation is a broad course which embraces aspects of many subjects – history, literature, art, geography and others, helping to develop students' knowledge of the Greeks and Romans. The department also offers a range of vibrant co-curricular trips and activities, including visits to plays and museums, and study tours of Greece and Italy.

Working at Emanuel
There is always a buzz at Emanuel. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school. With a weekly staff briefing, half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, all of us are engaged in a lively ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims and aspirations.
Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining us should expect to do the same and share our commitment to the highest standards. At the same time our ethos remains unpretentious, kindly and practical, and there’s a strong sense of community and friendship at the school.
We aim to look after our staff well: we have an appraisal scheme with a focus on employees’ professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer salary sacrifice childcare vouchers through TEDS Premier, we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. Financially, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.
