VAT Manager Role
This role supports the VAT Lead in ensuring that:
* The business fully meets its external VAT reporting obligations and complies with all applicable indirect tax legislation.
* Appropriate indirect tax opportunities are identified and executed in line with commercial decisions and Heathrow's Tax Strategy.
* High-quality technical tax advice is provided proactively and timely.
* Robust internal policies, processes, and controls are maintained from a Senior Accounting Officer and Business Risk Rating perspective.
* Business-as-usual operations are effective and efficient for VAT purposes.
As a VAT Manager, you will handle complex commercial and technical issues involving large data sets and high-value sums. You will manage end-to-end reporting and compliance, support governance frameworks, and contribute to process improvements, especially concerning the Finance Team's digitisation and automation goals. Collaboration with finance and wider business stakeholders to manage risk and develop solutions is essential.
You should be comfortable managing change, simplifying complex tax issues, communicating across levels, and applying broad tax and commercial knowledge to processes and discussions.
Principal Accountabilities
The role includes line management of one Finance Analyst, Indirect Tax, and involves:
* Overseeing and reviewing monthly VAT return processes for two UK VAT Groups.
* Supporting the VAT Lead in maintaining HMRC relationships.
* Providing advice on routine queries, reviewing contracts, and determining VAT treatments.
* Contributing to finance and commercial projects and new initiatives.
* Reviewing business areas and recommending improvements for controls and risk management.
* Maintaining governance frameworks and assessing BRR and SAO readiness.
* Monitoring and implementing changes in indirect tax legislation.
* Providing VAT training to the business.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential skills include:
* Proven experience in VAT compliance and advisory roles within a commercial setting.
* Strong understanding of UK indirect tax compliance processes.
* ACA / ACCA / ATT / CTA qualification (or equivalent) with several years post-qualification VAT experience.
* Teamwork, influencing skills, and experience managing junior team members.
* Excellent communication skills, effective stakeholder engagement.
* Ability to see tasks through from initial query to resolution.
* Good time and project management skills, prioritization, and escalation abilities.
* Data analysis skills with attention to detail.
* Strategic thinking with commercial awareness and ability to provide clear advice.
* Strong IT skills, particularly in Excel.
Desirable:
* Knowledge of Oracle and OneSource for VAT.
