This role is based within the Materials Technology department (part of the Component Manufacturing Technology group) whose capabilities include large-scale powder HIP, solid state processing, and materials circularity.
The role is designed to:
1. Support the commercial activities of the business with high quality engineering content to improve proposal/project quality.
2. Act as a bridge between the Sector and Technology teams.
3. Collaborate with the technology manager and capability leads within their group to understand, and market, the latest technology offerings and, where appropriate, ensure proposals align with priorities for capability building.
4. Ensure that we’re proposing the best technical solution for a project to address the customer’s needs and maximize the value of projects for the MTC.
5. Lead major strategic CR&D opportunities and technology marketing campaigns.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Industrial proposal development: Meet with customers, communicate our technologies, and understand their needs to propose solutions with tangible benefits.
2. Deliver high quality and timely technical project proposals that address customer needs, are properly costed, and contain an appropriate level of risk.
3. Maximize the value for customer and MTC in each proposal.
1. Collaborative R&D: Support development of group CR&D opportunities, aligned to technology roadmaps by identifying appropriate calls, building relationships with potential partners, and managing submissions.
2. Work with Technology Management and sector chiefs to develop and submit larger, strategic proposals with high levels of capability development and find appropriate funding.
1. Marketing: Manage and prioritize the generation of impactful marketing collateral (case studies, papers, demonstrators) from the technology teams.
2. Work with marketing on regular releases and developing larger campaigns to push relevant capability.
1. Exploitation: Awareness and dissemination of existing technology capability and developing new exploitation pathways.
1. Pipeline management and reporting: Provide insights to ensure direction of travel aligns with group strategy and business priorities.
2. Monitor win rate and cost of sales and run targeted improvement activities if either falls outside of normal bounds.
3. Identify common, unmet customer demands and feedback to technology teams to ensure capability development aligns with industry pull.
Person Specification
Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience
1. A relevant degree in engineering or materials science.
2. Extensive knowledge in powder metallurgy and net shape technologies.
3. Experience working in R&D or project-based environments.
4. Demonstrable commercial skills and acumen including experience of proposing, costing, pricing, and winning R&D project work from industrial organisations in a competitive environment.
5. Experience of having produced and reviewed technical reports and/or guidance materials on engineering topics.
6. Experience of working in a high-quality academic research or industrial R&D environment.
7. Actively interested in growing links with academia and industry.
Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience
1. Master’s or PhD in materials processing or related engineering degree.
2. 10+ years of industrial experience.
3. A working knowledge of powder metallurgy and net shape manufacturing processes.
4. A working knowledge of machine capabilities and specifications required to process materials in a wider range of technologies to support stakeholder process development and procurement.
