Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
How's this for job satisfaction: at Scottish Water we look after Scotland's most precious natural resource. From source to tap, we're guarding Scotland's reputation for refreshingly pure water, and caring for our environment at the same time.
Naturally, the work we do is closely regulated. Our Wastewater Strategy & Environmental Team (WWS&ER) play a pivotal role in building trust with our external stakeholders and regulators. Right now, we're looking for an Environmental Regulation Analyst to join the team.
What you'll do
As an Environmental Regulations Analyst, you'll support the business to meet its environmental regulatory reporting requirements and provide environmental regulatory support, advice and guidance to the business. You'll become a subject matter expert for reporting requirements and the tools we use for reporting.
Many of your customers will be Scottish Water people - we like to keep them happy. But you'll also work closely with our Environmental Regulator, SEPA and other external stakeholders, who we want to build great relationships with too. You'll be working across teams to support the delivery of regulatory returns, responses to regulatory communications and information requests linked to reporting requirements and input to specific projects.
And then there's the data. There's always data. You'll co-ordinate the collation, review and analysis of data for reporting, keeping systems and trackers used for reporting up to date, creating reports and updates people can understand.
What you'll need
You'll have a general understanding of European and UK environmental legislation, particularly Scottish regulations and the regulatory framework within which Scottish Water operates. An understanding of environmental regulatory reporting requirements would be handy, but this is not essential.
It would be handy if you have a qualification in a scientific discipline, but it's not a must-have if you have equivalent experience.
Building and maintaining good relationships and collaboration with stakeholders will be the key to success. So, you'll need to be confident and have great communication and collaboration skills. You'll be the kind of person that's able to naturally build strong working relationships.
Data collation, review and analysis is a big part of the job, so you'll need a great analytical brain and practical experience of data analysis. Lots of this is digital-first, so your IT skills will be solid too. That should include experience using MS Office to create reports, spreadsheets, presentations, guidance and/or internal processes.
You'll need to be able to delve into the detail, interpret and analyse complex information, so you'll need to be able to think critically, solve problems and relay information in an engaging, coherent and accessible way.
You'll need to attend some key meetings face-to-face and make site visits throughout Scotland, so you'll need to hold a full UK driving licence.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, it's not the only thing that matters. That's why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
This role is full time (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday with a flexible work pattern. You'll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events, we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? Applications with part time or flexible working requirements will also be considered.
For your future, there's our pension (the 'know-what-you'll-get-when-you-retire' kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash - handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 6. If you're new to Scottish Water, you'll join us on a starting salary of £33,560. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £44,140.
You'll need to live within commuting distance of one of our office hubs in the central belt, e.g., Edinburgh, Stepps, Stirling, Dundee, Perth. We operate a hybrid working model, so you can expect to spend some days working from home, some days working from the office and some days out on site visits.
If you're interested in this role - or know someone else who might be - we'll be accepting applications until midnight on Sunday 26th of January 2024. And we're aiming to do interviews for this role over week commencing Monday 10th of February or week commencing Monday the 24th of February 2025.
A few final things worth knowing...
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you're interested in this job, but don't tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don't rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We're very used to making adjustments, so please don't be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it's important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don't already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven't submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won't need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
