Job Description
Working hours are Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm.
This role is designed for a HCPC-registered Biomedical or Clinical Scientist to manage the day-to-day service and the laboratory team in the Clinical Genetics department. Pre-registration Clinical Scientists will also be considered.
* To manage the day-to-day service of the laboratory, ensuring that all turn around times are met.
* To supervise and manage junior staff in the department to provide a high-quality clinical service.
* To support the training of other members of staff and promote Continuous Professional Development (CPD) within the department.
* Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, and to refer on to appropriate specialists' requests for information outside their area of responsibility.
* To perform a range of specialist technical and scientific activities.
* To oversee (and to perform, where required) the processing of the specimens received and to undertake the related tasks in the various sections of the laboratory, leading to the reporting and interpretation of results.
* To interpret first line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures. e.g. authorisation of results, ordering relevant follow-up laboratory procedures, adding technical and approved pre-defined clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, informing the requestor of clinically significant result.
* To liaise with the laboratory director, medical and scientific staff in all matters relating to screening and diagnosis.
* Maintain the quality assurance procedures of the department, ensuring work towards UKAS ISO: 15189 standards.
* Measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
* To ensure section has sufficient equipment and consumables.
* To ensure that complex equipment within the section is maintained to agreed schedules and fix problems as requires. Liaise with external technical representatives as required.
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science, genetics or equivalent.
* UK State Registration (HCPC). Biomedical science or Clinical Scientist. Pre-registration Clinical scientist will be considered.
* Able to present and discuss scientific data with senior management
* Ability to prioritise and manage staff and resources on a day-to-day basis.
* Ability to make judgements in liaison with senior managers on complex scientific matters.
* Proven experience of line managing a team including supporting, encouraging and coaching.
* Proven experience in change management within ISO 15189 accreditation standards.
* Able to present and discuss key metric data to senior managers as and when required.
* Skills in using LIMS and middleware in relation to requesting, reporting and setting up new tests.
* Extensive working knowledge of laboratory areas, including both practical and theoretical knowledge of the methods
* Able to undertake technical validation of results
* Ability to communicate technical information
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations
* Computer literate
* Strong eye for accuracy and attention to detail
* Good communication skills both written and verbal
