Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated Clinical Scientist/ GI Physiologist to join the expanding GI Physiology department at Sandwell Health Campus.
The post-holder would be expected to be suitably educated e.g. BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology or MSc Clinical Science and appropriately accredited in the UK, e.g. as a Registered Clinical Scientist in GI Physiology and / or as an Accredited Independent Practitioner by the Association of GI Physiologists. Applications from those who are newly qualified and those who will qualify this year are encouraged. The post holder will perform a variety of gastrointestinal procedures including: high resolution oesophageal and anorectal manometry, ambulatory oesophageal pH Impedance monitoring, wireless pH monitoring, endoanal ultrasound and hydrogen breath testing.
The department also provides a small bowel capsule endoscopy service and Capsule Sponge service. The successful candidate would be expected to perform these tests; however, fully training would be provided should these fall outside current scope of practice.
Main duties of the job
To undertake a variety of clinical physiological diagnostic tests on patients, including interpreting results and creating accurate reports. At times will provide supervision for day-to-day management of the service.
Training of other staff groups on occasion. The clinical supervision and training of students and department trainees is a significant part of the role.
Responsible for providing a professional service in relation to patients needing GI physiology investigations i.e. prioritise list planning, organising appointments, diagnosing condition from test result etc. The department is regularly involved in MDT meetings. It organises and hosts a monthly physiology MDT and participates in a monthly Pelvic Floor MDT.
Staff would be encouraged to expand their knowledge and skills and would be supported to attend training and meetings to facilitate professional development.
The GI Physiology department at Sandwell Hospital is a small busy department consisting of a clinical scientist and an STP student. The department works closely with the endoscopy, gastroenterology, and general surgery departments to provide a wide range of GI Physiology investigations. The department is proactive in training, developing, and supporting staff to reach their potential, acquiring skills in new areas.
The service acts as a tertiary referral centre within the West Midlands and provides an Upper GI Physiology service one day for a neighbouring Trust.
