Purpose of the Job
We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Health and Safety professional to ensure operational safety for the development, production and testing of Oxitec's self-limiting insect technologies.
As a Senior Health & Safety Advisor, you will join our dynamic quality team, reporting directly to Oxitec's Compliance Lead, and provide health and safety support to all departments, with a strong level of support to lab-based teams. You will be responsible for routine safety activities, including writing risk assessments, COSHH assessment, investigating and closing accident and near-miss events. You will also perform internal safety audits to ensure that all staff comply with safety policies and practices. You will need to use your knowledge and skills to further develop the positive health and safety culture at Oxitec.
Responsibilities
* Provide health & safety guidance to all teams, strengthening Oxitec's positive health and safety culture.
* Work with teams to prepare risk assessments, COSHH assessments and standard operating procedures.
* Identify potential hazards and determine fit-for-purpose solutions of reducing risks.
* Provide health and safety training. Work with teams to ensure up-to-date training records for all team members.
* Ensure that H&S critical equipment is maintained and serviced on time.
* Perform internal health and safety audits.
* Investigate accident and near-miss reports and track the implementation of improvement actions.
* Run health and safety meetings.
* Keep up to date and ensure compliance with current health and safety legislation.
Skills, Experience, and Education Requirements
* A BSc in Biological Sciences or similar.
* Experience of working in a laboratory is essential.
* IOSH or NEBOSH training is required.
* Excellent inter-personal skills, the ability to build and develop relationships.
* Diligent and organised, with the ability to accurately record data.
* A creative approach to problem solving and the development of applied solutions.
* Strong attention to detail, with excellent timekeeping standards and responsiveness.
* Self-starting, with the ability to work independently and be a strong team player.
* Good written English and oral communication skills.
* Competent in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
