The Telegraph's Foreign Projects Editor is tasked with generating exciting, original journalism on foreign affairs.
The role involves liaising with our team of correspondents to shape the reporting, develop exclusives, and commission dispatches, features, and investigations.
They will be focused on producing a full text and visual package, combining multimedia and graphics, among other assets, to accompany articles.
The successful candidate will be a central and creative figure on the foreign desk.
They will have the opportunity to take charge of the editing of the Telegraph's world news coverage on some days. Curiosity, efficiency, quality writing, and self-motivation are key qualities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Generating ideas, commissioning, editing, and publishing for The Telegraph both online and in print, working across the week and regular weekend shifts.
2. Driving through dispatches and longer-term investigations that can be published outside the strict demands of daily news.
3. Planning for major events to assist with commissioning.
4. Editing the foreign section on days when they will be running the world news coverage.
5. Liaising with approximately 30 foreign correspondents and acting as a point of contact during breaking news events.
6. Working with desk editors from multiple departments (video, graphics, pictures) on breaking news and upcoming long-term events.
7. Engaging with a community of readers interested in international news via Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms.
8. Opportunity to build up your own areas of specialism and develop projects.
9. Proven track record of news editing in a national or international newsroom.
10. Passion for quality writing and ability to edit copy to a high standard.
11. Strong news sense, with the ability to seek out exclusives and breaking stories.
12. Experience of planning coverage of future news events and preparing diary items of news.
13. Experience of working to tight daily deadlines.
14. Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely, and to house style.
15. Have a good working understanding of social media channels to both spot and promote stories.
16. Be familiar with and have experience of digital storytelling techniques.
17. Proficiency in a second language is desirable.
