Job overview
The Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran, Wales, is looking to appoint a replacement permanent Consultant in Neonatal Medicine. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity in a progressive level 3 neonatal unit in South Wales. The post is based at the Neonatal Intensive Care at The Grange University Hospital, but the post-holder will have additional commitments to the neonatal clinics at various sites within the Health Board and to the Cymru Inter-Hospital Acute Neonatal Transfer Service (CHANTS).
The purpose-designed Level 3 Neonatal Unit at The Grange University Hospital opened in 2020 with a cot capacity for up to 32 babies, comprising 6 Intensive Care, 9 High Dependency, and 17 Special Care cots. It caters for around 6,000 deliveries across Gwent and has over 1500 intensive care days annually. Babies of all gestations are cared for here. Surgical and cardiac babies are referred either to the University Hospital of Wales, with whom we have close links, or Bristol.
The Unit is staffed by 11 WTE Neonatal Consultants (including this post) and 1 Associate Specialist for daytime cover and out of hours on call. There is a middle grade 1 in 8 rota and a full tier 1 rota with a 1 in 8 on-call commitment, consisting of HEIW trainees, clinical fellows, and ANNPs.
Main duties of the job
The job plan comprises 8 sessions including 2 sessions for supporting professional activities (SPAs). The job plan will incorporate consultant of the week cover for NICU and special care. There will be commitments for resident tier 3 weekend and evening cover, and non-resident night cover on call. The post holder will also contribute to 24 hours Welsh neonatal transfer service and outpatient clinics. The number of sessions and/or the balance of direct care sessions (DCCs) and SPAs may subsequently vary with the agreement of the post holder and the Health Board but based on the needs of the department and will require agreement at job planning. There is no responsibility for general paediatric services.
Candidates with special interest and expertise are welcome if they are compatible with the current work of the department.
Job share applicants are welcome. If such persons are appointed, modification of the job contents will be discussed on a personal basis.
