The Intensive Care Staff Nurse will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care of patients requiring level 2 and 3 care under indirect supervision from senior staff. They are expected to provide general and specialised direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols of the healthcare organisation.
Main duties of the job
To be responsible for the provision of skilled, specialist nursing care to level 2 and level 3 patients within the multidisciplinary care team. There will be a requirement to supervise, on a day-to-day basis, qualified and newly qualified staff in achieving objectives. A registered nurse who is able to use knowledge and skills to assist and support the provision of care. Additionally, will gain or utilise existing skills in the provision of safe and effective care to level 2 and 3 patients. The department at North Tees is a busy unit delivering high-quality care to both surgical and medical patients. We can provide advanced respiratory, cardiovascular, and renal support as required. We are funded for ten level 3 and six level 2 patients, although can utilise the beds flexibly according to patient/service need. We are also pleased to provide an excellent Outreach service to complement the Trust's commitment to patient safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Communications and Relationship
* Applies effective communication in clinical practice with a caring and compassionate attitude at all times.
* Utilises communication aids for complex patients who find it difficult to communicate due to sedation or mechanical reasons such as tracheostomies.
* Establishes and maintains effective communication with individuals, the wider nursing team, and other health professionals regarding patient’s conditions, care planning, and treatments.
* Ensures effective communication with patient’s relatives and carers, explaining medical conditions, progress, and investigations taking into consideration level of understanding, culture, and background.
* Develops and maintains effective channels of communication within the team, engaging staff at all levels.
* Actively manages barriers to communication across all areas of responsibility to ensure positive outcomes.
* Communicates regularly and effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of clinical care and service delivery, including environmental issues.
* Encourages families to negotiate and take an active role in the welfare and care of their child in hospital.
* Must be able to demonstrate the English language proficiency level required for the post.
Analytical and Judgement skills
* Works as an autonomous practitioner and part of the multi-disciplinary team to assess and implement care to patients with complex needs.

* Familiarity with non-invasive and invasive equipment & ability to set equipment up as needed such as Nasal high flow, ventilators, transducer set, and NIV.
* Provides skills such as venepuncture, catheterisation, removal of catheters, removal of cannulas, blood glucose monitoring, ketone monitoring, ABGs, and 12 lead ECG.
* The post holder will be a highly trained critical care practitioner with the ability to deliver complex multi-organ support to patients, including but not exclusive to airway management, advanced breathing support, advanced cardiovascular support, and advanced renal support (CVVHD) or willingness to undertake training.
* Delivers personal care to critically ill patients, maintaining safety of multiple indwelling adjuncts that support organ dysfunction.
* Manages invasive lines within the critical care setting and utilises them to deliver powerful medication, take bloods, and monitor perfusion pressures. Performs blood gas sampling and utilises the blood gas analyser, interprets, and acts on results accordingly, which may involve complex changes to ventilation management.
* Inserts/removes urinary catheters as required and is able to insert/remove a bowel management system. Provides stoma care to patients.
* Ensures safe setup and cleaning of a critical care bed space ensuring all safety equipment is ready and available for immediate use.
* Nursing is on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis, therefore the patient's provision of care is based on a therapeutic relationship that is focused on patient complex care needs.
* Demonstrates expert professional/clinical competence and credibility.
* Ensures privacy and dignity is achieved for all patients.
* Ensures a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
* Prevents hospital-acquired infection by ensuring the highest standard of infection control, cleanliness, and healthcare environment.
* Contributes to the prevention and management of untoward occurrences by responding to emergencies.
* Acts as patients advocate in all matters relating to his or her care, treatment, and welfare acknowledging and incorporating cultural preferences, health beliefs, and behaviours.
Person specification
Shortlisting Criteria
* Qualifications: Registered RN with valid NMC pin.
* Experience: Hospital setting experience.
* Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with patients, families, and colleagues.
* IT Proficiency: Competence in using electronic patient records and other healthcare IT systems.
* Skills: Proficient in advanced life support, ventilator management, and critical care monitoring.
* Teamwork: Strong ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Adaptability: Ability to remain calm and effective in high-pressure situations.
* Leadership: Experience in mentoring junior staff or leading nursing teams in a critical care environment.
