We are recruiting for a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care who wishes to join #TeamIOWNHS. You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards “great people, great place”.
We are a friendly, genuinely supportive and active department looking to recruit an enthusiastic individual who will take part in the high-quality delivery and development of the anaesthetic and chronic pain services on the Isle of Wight.
Due to expansion of our Intensive Care services and strengthening out of hours specialist cover, we are expanding our intensive care consultant workforce. The successful applicant will join our current 6 ICU consultants.
Our critical care services are firmly embedded in the regional Thames Valley & Wessex Adult Critical Care Network. Our ICU has regular informal and formal peer review meetings from the regional network which both strengthens the relationship with our neighbouring hospitals and ensures ongoing improvement and delivery of excellent care.
The post is 10 PA consisting of participation in a 1 in 12 non-resident on-call rota with prospective cover for anaesthetics and ICU. The Trust has invested in new estates which include a new 8 bedded level 3 ICU as well as a new emergency floor and diagnostics centre.
ICNARC data shows that our patient outcomes are good when benchmarked with our peers. We have outstanding links with our partner hospital Portsmouth University Hospital and the regional tertiary centres. We recently had a GIRFT review with overall very positive feedback.
For an overview of the main duties of the role, please see the 'Job Description and Main Responsibilities' section below. To understand the day-to-day responsibilities in more detail, please read the full job description document attached.
We are passionate about providing excellent CARE, which is why our values are Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Everyone counts. Our mission is to make sure that our community is at the heart of everything we do and that we uphold our values across all our services.
We are committed to endorsing inclusion, diversity, and multiculturalism throughout our services, and our procedures and policies ensure that applicants are always treated fairly throughout the recruitment process.
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust is the only integrated acute, community, mental health, and ambulance healthcare provider in England. We serve a population of approximately 150,000 residents, making the services we offer variable and personalised with a flexible approach to our service users.
Working for our Trust brings a variety of benefits, including an onsite day nursery, cycle-to-work scheme, discounts at local businesses and gyms, and the opportunity to hire the Trust’s beach hut in Ryde. We offer many flexible working opportunities; speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement for you, and if it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.
Duties of the post
The ICU utilises a 6-week rolling schedule for the in-hours duty consultant between the hours of 08:00 & 18:00.
All 6 current post holders undertake anaesthetic sessions and have strong links to the anaesthetic department. Should the applicant prefer to undertake sessions in an alternative department (e.g., medicine), this can also be considered.
The anaesthetic Department utilises a 12-week rolling schedule. It is expected that the successful applicant would undertake theatre lists in a wide range of specialities including colorectal surgery, trauma, ophthalmic theatre, and maternity, as well as the pre-assessment clinic and daytime on-call consultant rota.
The anaesthetic & ICU consultants provide out-of-hours non-resident consultant cover for anaesthesia for emergency surgery, obstetric anaesthesia, and the management of the intensive care unit on a 1:12 prospective cover basis.
The anaesthetic department has recently strengthened our in-hours anaesthetic senior cover, with the provision of daytime resident consultant sessions to undertake emergency work and ensure the smooth running of theatres.
Intensive Care Unit (ICU): We have daily multidisciplinary ward rounds with colleagues from pharmacy, microbiology, dietitians, and physiotherapists. The unit admits about 400 patients a year, with the majority (70%) being critically ill adult medical patients.
We have up-to-date equipment, monitoring, and ventilators that can be expected from a general high-quality intensive care unit. The Trust is currently developing an ICU follow-up service and enhanced care provision for level 1+ patients. There is ample opportunity for the post holder to be involved in these developments.
Critical care outreach is well established, and this nurse-led service also leads the hospital at night team, providing 24/7 cover in supporting the timely assessment and referral of critically ill patients.
The medical staffing consists of 7 consultants (including this post), each of whom undertake weeks on ICU. There is a resident SAS doctor 24/7 as well as an FY2 trainee post. Out of hours, the consultant support is shared with the anaesthetic department.
The Anaesthetic Department
The department provides anaesthetic services for general, ophthalmic, maxillofacial, ENT, urological, orthopaedics, and gynaecological surgery. We have 7 operating theatres and a dedicated obstetric theatre.
We also provide anaesthetic and resuscitation services to obstetrics, paediatrics, radiology, ECT, and the ED. The relative geographical isolation means that all anaesthetists must maintain a wide range of core skills to safely deliver these low-frequency but high-impact services.
The new post holder will be expected to work closely with the Acute Pain Service when implementing new post-operative pain management strategies.
Job Planning and Appraisal
Post holders will take part in Annual Appraisal and performance review against objectives as well as specific requirements laid out above.
