About the Role
We are seeking a passionate Second in Department – English to support the Head of English in leading and managing the department. You will play a key role in shaping the English curriculum and ensuring high-quality teaching and learning for KS3 and KS4 students, including those with SEN and SEMH needs. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious educator to take on leadership responsibilities while making a meaningful impact on students’ academic progress and personal development.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Department Support
* Assist the Head of English in leading the department and maintaining high teaching standards.
* Lead and support the delivery of literacy intervention programmes.
* Deliver English lessons both onsite and at alternative venues.
* Mentor and support colleagues, promoting best practices and professional growth.
* Contribute to curriculum planning, ensuring an inclusive and engaging syllabus.
Teaching & Learning
* Deliver high-quality English lessons for KS3 and KS4, adapting for SEN and SEMH needs.
* Use assessment data to monitor progress and implement interventions.
* Promote literacy and encourage student engagement in reading and writing.
Student Support & Behaviour Management
* Implement effective behaviour management strategies to foster a positive learning environment.
* Support students’ personal and academic development, addressing barriers to learning.
* Maintain strong communication with parents, carers, and external agencies.
Assessment & Progress Tracking
* Ensure effective assessment, marking, and feedback to drive student progress.
* Work with SENCo, leadership, and staff to enhance student outcomes.
* Contribute to extra-curricular activities, literacy initiatives, and staff training.
Required Skills & Experience
* Degree in English or a related subject, with PGCE/ QTS or equivalent qualification.
* At least two years’ teaching experience, preferably within KS3 and KS4.
* Proven ability to differentiate teaching strategies to meet the needs of SEN and SEMH students.
* Experience supporting staff development and mentoring teachers.
* Strong classroom management and behaviour support skills.
* Excellent communication, leadership, and team collaboration abilities.
