As the Clinical Coding Department Manager, you will be responsible for the daily running of the Clinical Coding Teams across both the UHW (Cardiff) and UHL (Llandough) sites, whilst ensuring that departmental objectives are achieved.
In addition to this you will support the Head of Clinical Coding in strategic service development and the implementation of a robust training and audit program within the UHB. The successful candidate will also be expected to engage with services and clinicians to make operational improvements, aligned to the plans for service collaboration as led by the Head of Clinical Coding.
Ideal candidates should have passed the National Clinical Coding Qualification to become an Accredited Clinical Coder.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
* Daily management of the Clinical Coding team across both UHW and UHL sites.
* Support the Head of Clinical Coding in the development and implementation of various service improvement projects.
* Identify the training needs of staff within the department and organise and facilitate appropriate training where needed.
* Cover absences within the management team.
* Deliver on departmental, UHB and national coding targets.
* Manage Health & Safety within the clinical coding department.
* Any other duties in keeping with the effective management of the Clinical Coding Department as directed by the Head of Clinical Coding.

Job responsibilities
* Effectively manage staff under the guidance of UHB policies and procedures, including managing sickness within the Clinical Coding Department and supporting staff in respect of performance and training.
* Establish and maintain a comprehensive appraisal/Personal development programme (PDP) for all staff, in collaboration with the Head of Clinical Coding.
* Ensure that service objectives are met within the UHB performance management framework.
* Regularly review and update local coding policies, ensuring consistency with Data Quality at national standards and local policies.
* Identify the training needs of staff and devise and implement a training program.
* Ensure all staff who assign clinical codes have attended a recognised course in clinical coding and support staff taking the National Clinical Coding Qualification.
* Devise and implement a Clinical Coding Audit Programme to continually assess the quality of clinical coding within the UHB.
* Ensure adherence to national standards and agreed protocols for coding.
* Evaluate and implement recommendations arising from clinical coding/data quality audits.
* Raise awareness and educate clinicians and Directorate staff on Clinical Coding and its contribution to clinical management and business.
* Provide Clinical Coding Awareness presentations to clinicians and managers.
* Undertake routine data quality audits as directed.
* In liaison with clinical analysts, undertake specific coding information projects to support the Clinical Governance agenda.
* Review operational procedures for compliance with Digital Healthcare Wales and CfH guidance.
* Ensure proposed developments are consistent with current ICD-10 and OPCS manuals.
* Communicate outcomes of clinical coding audit activity throughout the UHB.
* Identify coding trends and issues pertinent to clinical audit.
* Manage Health and Safety within the Clinical Coding Environment.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Good General Standard of Education
* Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC)
* Supervisory/Management Qualification (NVQ 4 or similar)
* Clinical Coding Audit/Trainer Qualification
Experience
* Minimum 2 years NHS experience
* Working with Healthboard wide remit
* NHS Management Experience

* Computer Literate
* Experience using Medicode or equivalent encoder
* PMS/PAS trained
