An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Humber and Yorkshire Coast Bowel Cancer Screening Centre. We are looking for an experienced nurse to join our bowel cancer screening team. The successful candidate will have a key role in the assessment, care and support of people participating within the centre's footprint.
The bowel cancer screening centre has been serving the public since 2006. It invites people 54 - 74 years old to participate within the screening programme. This is soon to be expanded down to people aged 50 and 52 years old. Screening has recently taken over surveillance colonoscopy for people with Lynch Syndrome. This cohort of patients will start surveillance at either 25 or 35 years old depending on their gene mutation.
The post holder will be involved in assessing participant's fitness for bowel cancer screening investigations. They will assist in the complex decision-making process to ensure safe and competent care for screening participants. You will act as the participants' advocate, supporting and empowering them to make informed decisions about their screening. The post holder must ensure the participants receive a quality service to encourage future participation and to reassure others to take part. You will deal with sensitive issues including anxiety about the outcome of their episode. If the outcome is cancer, this diagnosis would be given by the post holder.
Main duties of the job
The role involves the delivery of clinics (assessment, surveillance and post investigation). These are telephone or virtual unless there is a clinical need to see them face to face. A willingness to travel, have a driving license and a car is essential. You will be present at colonoscopy lists within the relevant endoscopy departments to support the participants and collect data. You will attend the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT's) when screening patients are to be discussed. The post holder will be expected to work within the centre's footprint, travelling between the five endoscopy units and working at the DPoW (Grimsby office) on a rotational basis. Flexibility is required to ensure full coverage of the service; it could involve weekend and evening shifts.
