This is a unique opportunity for someone with specialist knowledge and experience in the certification of electric propulsion systems, hydrogen fuel cells, battery technology, software certification or other complex system design assurance aspects to join a team of aircraft certification specialists in the certification of aircraft designs and modifications incorporating new or novel emerging technologies or other complex systems.
The Airworthiness and Engineering Branch is responsible for policy, legislation, guidance material, internal procedures and processes for all elements of the airworthiness domain, as well as aircraft certification, regulatory services and surveillance of design and production approval holders, monitoring and addressing unsafe conditions of in-service aircraft, and maintaining Australia's airworthiness obligations under the Chicago Convention and other international agreements.
The Senior Certification Engineer - Systems position is responsible for the certification and initial airworthiness of aircraft designs, modifications, and aeronautical products in Australia related to emerging technologies such as electric propulsion systems, hydrogen fuel cells, and associated battery technology or other specialist fields such as software certification and other complex systems design assurance and certification.
The position requires working as a member of multi-disciplinary certification teams and liaising with areas of expertise within CASA and Australian Industry to ensure that the airworthiness requirements for type certification projects are satisfied in accordance with CASA regulations, stated objectives, and priorities. The position may be required to act as a certification team leader and may require interstate and international travel.
Reporting to the Manager Aircraft Certification, the Senior Certification Engineer – Systems is responsible for the following deliverables, which represent an ongoing body of work:
* Manage and undertake work associated with aircraft certification projects and make specialist recommendations to the Manager Aircraft Certification regarding certification of aircraft designs, modifications, and aeronautical products.
* Work as part of a multidisciplinary team of technical specialists, including internal and external stakeholders, to achieve certification of aircraft designs, modifications, and aeronautical products.
* Operate with a high level of independence, under general direction demonstrating sound engineering and regulatory judgement.
* Assess technical data and certification documentation for the purposes of issuing certificates, approvals, exemptions, or exclusions for Australian registered aircraft.
* Manage schedule and ensure that all work is carried out in a timely manner and in accordance with applicable procedures and policies.
* Provide interpretation, advice, and/or guidance as appropriate on aircraft certification matters to CASA, government agencies, the aviation industry, and the Australian public.
* Provide advice on the development of CASA policy, including regulatory amendments and design standards for new technologies.
* Participate in surveillance activities of authorised persons and design organisations.
* Promote workplace safety, equity, and diversity, and act in accordance with the CASA Values and Behaviours.
* Work supportively and cooperatively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to achieve shared outcomes in a sensitive, respectful, and equitable manner.
Our ideal candidate must demonstrate the following:
* Considerable knowledge and experience in the design, development, and certification of safety-critical systems comprised of software and/or complex electronic hardware and related design assurance requirements; or
* Considerable knowledge and experience in the design and certification of electric aircraft propulsion systems; or
* Knowledge and experience in the design and certification of hydrogen fuel cell systems and hydrogen fuel storage and distribution systems within the aviation or similar industries; or
* Knowledge and experience in the design and certification of battery-electric energy storage and power conversion and distribution systems for electric aircraft propulsion; and
* Comprehensive working knowledge of aviation safety legislation, or a similar regulatory regime.
* Extensive knowledge and experience in an engineering discipline such as Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronic, or Systems engineering or a similar discipline.
* Knowledge and experience in system safety, including development assurance practices, functional hazard analysis, and system safety assessments.
* Proven ability to work as part of, and lead when required, multi-disciplined and professionally diverse teams to achieve results for design and certification projects.
* Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to produce accurate, well-researched, and concise briefing papers and reports.
The following ideal candidate requirements are desirable:
* Relevant experience within a National Aviation Authority is highly desirable.
* Certification experience in other specialist areas of aviation such as human factors, aircraft performance, airworthiness certification of remotely piloted aircraft systems.
* Experience as an authorized person or design organization in the certification of aircraft designs and modifications.
