GSL Education’s Lincoln branch is seeking a passionate and experienced Behaviour Support Assistant to join our client schools in Spilsby. This role is ideal for individuals committed to helping students with challenging behaviour thrive both academically and socially. The successful candidate will work closely with students who may display disruptive behaviours due to Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, offering them vital guidance and support.
Job Summary:
As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you will work within a dedicated team to provide personalised interventions for students with behavioural difficulties. You will be responsible for helping students develop coping mechanisms, manage their emotions, and improve their overall school experience. This is a challenging but highly rewarding role, where you will directly impact students' lives by fostering positive changes in their behaviour and emotional well-being.
Key Responsibilities for Behaviour Support Assistant:
1. Provide one-to-one and small group support for students exhibiting challenging behaviour.
2. Develop, implement, and monitor Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs) tailored to individual student needs.
3. Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to provide holistic behavioural support both in and outside the classroom.
4. Use de-escalation techniques to manage behavioural crises, ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
5. Assist in creating structured routines that promote positive behaviour and reduce incidents of disruption.
6. Build strong, trusting relationships with students to help them feel safe and supported within the school environment.
7. Support students' academic progress by helping them engage with the curriculum despite behavioural challenges.
8. Liaise with parents, carers, and external professionals such as social workers, educational psychologists, and counsellors to ensure comprehensive support for each student.
9. Facilitate workshops or small group sessions focusing on emotional regulation, anger management, and social skills development.
10. Maintain accurate records of behavioural incidents, interventions, and student progress, reporting to senior staff as required.
11. Assist in safeguarding students by identifying and reporting any concerns in line with school policies.
Essential Requirements for Behaviour Support Assistant:
1. Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs, ideally in a school setting.
2. Strong understanding of behaviour management strategies, including de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement.
3. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff, and external professionals.
4. Patience, resilience, and empathy when working with students facing emotional and behavioural challenges.
5. A relevant qualification in SEN, Childcare, Behaviour Management, or a related field (e.g. NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Youth Work, or Mental Health First Aid) is desirable.
6. Proven experience in managing challenging behaviour and promoting positive change.
7. Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
8. A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people, with a strong understanding of safeguarding protocols.
9. An enhanced DBS check registered to the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one.
