The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking to appoint a Radiotherapy Service Manager and Professional Lead Therapeutic Radiographer based in Newcastle.
We are looking for a well-motivated, experienced person to lead the delivery of radiotherapy services within our Cancer Centres in Newcastle and Carlisle (Northern Centre for Cancer Care North Cumbria).
This management position within NCCC/NCCCNC involves the full range of management accountabilities including day-to-day operational management of the radiotherapy department in both Newcastle and North Cumbria.
This post is responsible for teams across both departments incorporating approximately 100 members of staff, predominantly radiographers.
We have 9 Varian TrueBeams, 2 Tomotherapy units, 3 CT Scanners, 1 SXT unit and 1 HDR brachytherapy unit across our two sites, delivering treatment to approximately 6000 new patients per year employing a wide range of therapies.

The post holder takes day-to-day responsibility for delivery of the radiotherapy department's key performance indicators as laid out in the NHS England's service specification. This includes achieving the national cancer waiting time targets including the 62 and 31-day waits.
Main duties of the job
NCCC provides a highly specialized regional radiotherapy service to a population of circa 3.3 million across the North East and North Cumbria with radiotherapy service provision for circa 2.0 million.
This senior management position within NCCC/NCCC-NC involves the full range of management accountabilities for the delivery of radiotherapy services, including day-to-day operational management of the departments in both Newcastle and North Cumbria. A key objective for the post holder is to ensure equity of service delivery across the geographically spread treatment locations.
The role provides radiotherapy professional leadership to the Radiotherapy Operational Delivery Network (ODN) responsible for providing radiotherapy system leadership and the delivery of NHS England's vision and ambitions for the modernisation of radiotherapy services.
The annual budgetary management responsibilities for this role include £4.6 million for staff resources, and operational management and leadership of in excess of 100 staff members. As part of the senior management team of the Cancer and Haematology Clinical Board, the post holder will work collaboratively to propose and implement changes to radiotherapy service delivery across the two radiotherapy units.
Job responsibilities
Professional Lead Therapeutic Radiographer:
* To lead and be responsible for the delivery of radiotherapy services and implementation of radiotherapy pathways ensuring a cohesive, effective and seamless service is provided to service users across NCCC and NCCC-NC.
* To be responsible for the safe and efficient use of multiple modalities, cutting edge Radiotherapy equipment, in the development and delivery of novel radiotherapy planning and treatment delivery techniques, and in the undertaking of research and development within the radiotherapy service.
* To provide professional leadership and strategic development of Consultant Radiographers and Advanced Radiotherapy Practitioners working within appropriate expert fields of Radiotherapy practice.
* Responsible for the safe delivery of a high-quality radiotherapy service, in a patient-oriented way to agreed standards and within available resources.
* To plan for and respond to changes in service needs and delivery.
* To take a lead on the strategic and operational management of radiotherapy delivery within the Clinical Board and provide expert advice in relation to radiotherapy delivery issues.
* To advise the Trust and external bodies on radiotherapy delivery issues.
* This role will work closely in conjunction with Radiotherapy Physics and Medical Staff for delivery of radiotherapy service.
* To provide line management support to the Operational Delivery Network Manager working towards achieving the objectives of the Radiotherapy Service Specification.
* To provide strategic leadership to the Northern Radiotherapy Network as a core member of the Network Oversight Group, covering area of responsibility.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* BSc (Hons) or Diploma of College of Radiographers (DCR(T)).
* Masters' degree or equivalent experience in service-related subject.
* HCPC registered Therapeutic Radiographer.
Knowledge & Experience
* Extensive, recent, operational experience at advanced/senior level, managing staff and resources within a radiotherapy service.
* Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of principles and concepts underpinning the broad range and the more specialist applications and techniques used in the radiotherapy Service.
* Understanding of key performance targets, measures, including clinical and corporate governance requirements and budget management.
* Experience of change management, service redesign and strategic planning.
* Knowledge of developments in radiotherapy and of the wider healthcare arena.
* Knowledge of Quality Management in Radiotherapy.
* Highly developed knowledge and experience of operational management including the day-to-day management of complex clinical services.
* Wide range of experience in radiotherapy, including at National level.
* A working knowledge of standards and legislation in other relevant areas e.g. Health and Safety at Work, Risk Management, Clinical Governance.
* Experience of project management and of leading or managing change initiatives.
* Experience of multi-professional working, and developing and fostering professional working relationships.
* Evidence of continued professional development.
* Knowledge of current research in oncology treatment and techniques.
* Experience of leading and organising change.
* Experience of professional involvement at National Level.
* Previous experience as a radiotherapy service manager or deputy.
