We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a full-time Fire Research Manager to join our team. In this role, you will conduct experimental research projects at the Fire Protection Association’s UKAS Accredited Fire Testing Laboratory and assist with other RISCAuthority research projects as needed.
Work location
Moreton in Marsh and Blockley Laboratory.
Key accountabilities
* To lead and support experimental research projects
* Manage the design and construction of fire tests
* Ensure fire tests are carried out safely and repeatedly
* Analyse fire test data and write technical reports to record the results
* To develop and manage jobs from costings phase through to delivery, helping to ensure that projects are delivered to their estimated cost
* To have budget responsibility for special projects and thereby ensure that budgets, revenue and contribution targets are met
* Ensure that equipment and consumables are procured at the best price and in good time
* To supervise the project team when undertaking experimental and research projects
* Manage the collection, assembly, preparing, issue, cleaning, maintenance and storage of equipment and other materials required for testing
* Manage, mentor and develop staff members within the special projects team
* Ensure H&S practices and policies are adhered to and that all work is carried out with proper diligence to health and safety of all employees and visitors to the fire test laboratory
* To undertake other project work within the wider research team, contributing to technical guides for insurers or other stakeholders via the RISCAuthority Team.
This is not an exhaustive list and the role may require tasks and activities that are deemed suitable based on skills and experience.
Key education and experience
* Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including English and Maths
* Relevant technical degree preferably in science or engineering
* Experience conducting and writing risk assessments
* Experience managing budgets
* Experimental/research experience
* Experience of working with fire
* Relevant health and safety certifications such as IOSH or NEBOSH
* Membership in professional institutions such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE)
* Experience managing staff and a team
* Experience working with contractors
* Laboratory experience, familiar with general laboratory/metrology practices
* Familiar with datalogging equipment
* Familiar with management and use of thermocouples
* Experience creating and interpreting technical drawings
