Job overview
Due to maternity leave we have an opportunity for a dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic optometrist to join our friendly team. Previous hospital experience and independent prescribing is desirable; however, we welcome newly qualified Optometrists. Banding will be dependent on experience and successful completion of competencies.
Training and support will be provided to develop roles, which will include a wide range of extended scope, such as paediatrics, low vision, post-op cataract care, and glaucoma. However, there may be opportunities to attend other specialties.
Main duties of the job
1. To work within the multi-disciplinary team, managing a wide and complex clinical caseload autonomously as an optometrist.
2. To be part of the specialist orthoptist/optometry team.
3. To provide high-quality and comprehensive optometry care.
4. Optometrist extended role to mainly include eye casualty; training will be provided in other areas of Optometry and Ophthalmology depending on service needs.
5. To ensure the effective and efficient running of the orthoptic/optometry and ophthalmology service.
6. To provide high-quality evidence-based optometry care to diagnose, plan, implement, and monitor treatment.
7. To teach orthoptic and ophthalmic colleagues.
8. To continually audit the optometry service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
1. To be involved in the following highly specialist clinics: Medical retina.
2. To co-ordinate clinics and ensure patients are given appropriate checks: Adult refraction, paediatric objective refraction.
3. To assess patients pre-operatively and discuss with the ophthalmologist the need for surgical intervention.
4. To discharge patients or organise appropriate onward referral for their ongoing care.
5. To observe safe working practices and comply with health and safety regulations.
Administrative Responsibilities
1. To take responsibility for all administrative paperwork ensuring it is kept in order and up to date.
2. To maintain the integrity of computerised patient appointment systems.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Optometry Degree
* Registration with General Optical Council
Knowledge & Experience
* Post-graduate experience with evidence of role extension.
* Evidence of appropriate knowledge base and CPD.
* Teaching experience and skills.
Skills and Competencies
* Able to manage own workload and use own initiative.
* Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
* Excellent presentation skills.
