Job Title: Design Engineer
Key relationships: Sales and Account Management; MP&L; Manufacturing; Fabrication; Servicing and Spares, Machine Build, SHEQ.
Monday - Thursday 8:00-4:30, Friday 8:00-3:30pm
Main Purpose of the Role
The Design Engineer role is critical in driving business growth through development of our company product portfolio. To achieve this, the role requires a good understanding of industry developments and customer requirements in order to create innovative and effective machine and tooling solutions.
Primary responsibility is for producing designs, schematics, 3D models, technical manuals, and assembly drawings of tooling, other company OEM designed machinery, sub-contract work, and other products.
Roles & Responsibilities:
* Development of new and existing product designs, ensuring that all drawings are designed for manufacture and within the company’s existing ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System.
* Input drawings and part numbers using the company’s MRP system (Factory Master).
* Ensure a standardised approach is followed regarding the recording of design changes, drawing numbers, drawing amendments, and drawing descriptions.
* Under the brand, liaising with customers, carry out site visits, and interpret requirements to ensure that the right solution can be created. Ensure all of the correct information is available to enable the preparation of a quotation and the subsequent design and manufacture of the product.
* Provide design support to sales and machine build, including installation and programming support.
* Ensure all completed works orders are signed off correctly.
* Provide feedback on the progress of projects, orders, and any escalations.
* Ensure all designs are compliant with relevant safety standards and appropriate UK and EU regulations, including testing.
* Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure new designs and amendments are suitably designed to enable efficient manufacture.
* Ensure all technical documentation and manuals are produced to support any newly designed machinery and are kept up to date to reflect design changes.
* Ensure all required dates are correct and amended as necessary on receipt of any order acknowledgement.
* Ensure any bought-in components are assigned relevant part numbers and are saved accordingly.
* Adhere to the company’s quality and H&S management system and supporting processes (ISO9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018). Use and wear appropriate PPE and challenge anyone/escalate to senior management where others are not compliant.
* Support a best practice and continuous improvement culture across the company, identifying opportunities where they arise and taking ownership for driving initiatives forward.
* Undertake and support internal and external audits as required, following company audit policies, processes, and schedules. Ensure any NCRs identified are rectified quickly, and by the agreed dates.
* Keep all work areas clean, tidy, and safe at all times.
* Any other relevant activities as required by the business.
Person Specification
Technical Skills
* Product knowledge – excellent knowledge of company products, along with how we design and manufacture them.
* Technical knowledge – excellent understanding of mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic engineering and applying that knowledge and experience to the design of company products using industry standard design tools.
* Software/programming – experience of programming PLCs (programmable logic controllers).

Experience
- 5 years’ design experience in an engineering business.
- Experience of managing projects of varying complexity, size, and budgets.
- Experience of designing electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and software (PLC) controlled machinery.
- 5 years’ experience of using Solid Edge or equivalent design tools.
- 5 years’ experience of using AutoCAD or equivalent design tools.
- First aid qualifications would be very useful.
Qualifications
Possession of a mechanical/electrical or other relevant engineering degree or qualification would be a distinct advantage
