The above part time (FTE) is available from Aug 2025 on a fixed term basis for 2 years, in the Doctoral Clinical PGR Programmes Portfolio within the Department of Psychology and Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (HLS). This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working some time on campus and some from home. This role is subject to final programme approval.
The role
We are seeking to appoint a part time (FTE) Research Director for the Forensic Psychology Doctorate (Senior Lecturer) which is available from August 2025 on a fixed term basis for 2 years.
Main duties of the job
Main purpose of the job: You will have responsibility, with the support of the Programme Director and DClinPGR Portfolio Director, for managing and monitoring the research aspects of the programme and their associated operational administration, curriculum development, and quality management and enhancement (including accreditation/registration by relevant professional institutions where appropriate). You will work with the Programme Director/Director of Portfolio as appropriate to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the research elements of the programme in accord with the Faculty's education strategy and implementing the External Affairs strategy.
The research curriculum, under the University of Exeter's Doctorate in Forensic Psychology (DForenPsy) programme, aims to enable trainee Forensic Psychologists to become evidenced-based sophisticated consumers and producers of forensic and applied research. The successful candidate will be a highly experienced research trainer who will be dedicated to the leadership task of preparing future Psychologists to become ethical and effective research-skilled Scientist Practitioners.
As Research Director on the DForenPsy Programme, you will act as co-ordinator for the research teaching and be responsible for key deliverables such as the successful completion of doctoral research theses within standard timescales (within 3 years) and the maintenance of strong collaborative provision with the research and forensic community in the local area and nationally.
Main duties and accountabilities
1. Responsibility for managing the research components of the DForenPsy, including oversight of day-to-day operational processes (timetabling, assessment, examination systems), and programme accreditation/registration processes.
2. Responsible for compliance with key external performance indicators for successful delivery of research elements of the programme as required by PSRBs such as the HCPC and BPS.
3. Work with the DForenPsy Programme Director by reporting on all research governance aspects of the DForenPsy at the Programme Strategic Management Group (SMG).
4. Ensure the systematic provision of high-quality research elements of the programme in forensic psychology, specifically to plan, oversee and audit the research components of the DForenPsy programme and ensure processes are compliant with PGR policy and practice as outlined in the University TQA manual.
5. Teach a range of research material on the programme (specify as needed).
6. Develop, promote and implement innovative teaching practices (with support from our Teaching Quality Assurance and Enhancement department), including technology-enhanced learning.
7. Oversee the monitoring of trainee research progress and provide advice and guidance to Research Tutors and trainees as appropriate, including oversight of the needs of trainees with special requirements and processes pertaining to mitigating circumstances.
8. Engage with DClinPGR, the Department and University Centre in working groups and committees as required.
9. Review and develop the research modules and ensure that the research components of the DForenPsy programme meet all PSRB requirements including BPS accreditation criteria, HCPC audit and programme approval processes, University TQA manual and any successor monitoring processes.
10. Manage the work of the Research Tutor Team, including supervision, training and induction of Research Tutors.
11. Coordinate and support the work of programme convenors and external teachers in relation to the research elements of the programme.
12. Chair appropriate programme committees overseeing the research programme.
13. Work with the Programme Director in reviewing and updating research assessment conventions and regulations.
14. Oversee the research module review and work with the Programme Director to support the development for the programme as a whole.
15. Write and maintain relevant sections of the Programme handbook and policies.
16. Contribute to other administrative duties as directed by the DForenPsy Programme Director and/or DClinPGR Director.
17. Develop a research/impact programme that enriches the DForenPsy teaching (independently or with others in the forensic psychology research group).
18. Facilitate and encourage the further development of research/impact within the DForenPsy for other staff and for trainees.
19. Contribute to teaching and training in the broader clinical/professional areas of DClinPGR/School as directed by the DForenPsy Programme Director and/or PGR/PGT Directors.
20. Contribute to the planning and delivery of DForenPsy post-qualification continuing professional development.
21. Develop a research/impact programme in relevant areas of forensic psychology, strengthening the work and international reputation of the research group, which can positively contribute to the Departments future Research Excellence Framework returns.
22. Promote the involvement of people with lived experience as appropriate in the research elements of the DForenPsy.
Essential
* Have experience of managing teams and/or functions in a busy environment with conflicting priorities.
* Have experience of teaching, curriculum development and quality management and enhancement ideally in a Higher Education environment.
* An understanding of psychology applied to health care.
* Experience of working across agencies, both NHS or non-NHS as a researcher or practitioner.
* Experience of postgraduate research teaching and supervision.
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
* Participation at national level in relevant professional leadership with the BPS or DFP, or with other PSRBs.
Desirable
* Have proven Leadership qualities in a Higher Education environment.
* Experience of working as a forensic psychology trainer on forensic psychology training programmes at a senior lead level.
* Supervising PG trainees in the completion of their doctoral level studies and experience of involvement in viva voce examinations.
* Experience of applying for external support for research.
* Track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
* Experience of working at a senior or strategic level in change management in an area of relevance to the DForenPsy.
