Energy is our second highest operational cost and a key contributor to our carbon emissions. This makes it a critical area for efficiency improvements. Your primary objective in this role will be to significantly contribute to the reduction of carbon and costs by enhancing the energy efficiency of our assets. This involves a strategic approach to identifying, developing, and implementing projects that not only improve energy efficiency but also support better operational energy management across our facilities.
You will be responsible for spearheading initiatives that optimise energy use, ensuring that our assets operate at peak efficiency. This includes conducting thorough assessments to identify potential energy-saving opportunities, developing comprehensive business cases and project plans, as well as overseeing the execution of these projects from inception to completion. Your role will be pivotal in driving energy efficiency improvements that align with our sustainability goals and operational objectives.
By collaborating with various stakeholders, including senior project managers, contractors, and internal teams, you will ensure that all projects are delivered safely on time, and within budget. Your efforts will directly impact our ability to manage energy consumption effectively, reduce operational costs, and enhance the overall performance and reliability of our assets.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
* Identify and Evaluate Opportunities: Find and evaluate potential opportunities to save energy by investing capital.
* Business Case Support: Develop business cases for energy efficiency projects and support business plan development for funding requests.
* Project Selection: Work with senior project managers to agree on which projects will be taken forward.
* Programme Planning: Prioritise and plan your assigned programmes of work.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Secure buy-in and cooperation from all internal and external stakeholders.
* Scope and Plan Agreement: Agree clear scopes and plans of work with all relevant stakeholders. Ensure that all relevant stakeholders are aware of and adhere to the project scopes and plans.
* Health and Safety Management: Assess and manage all health and safety risks throughout the life of all projects, including managing contractors.
* Contractor Collaboration: Work with contractors to deliver capital investment projects which deliver the defined benefits safely, within agreed quality and reliability specifications, and on time.
* Issue Management: Ensure that any deviations from the scope, forecast savings, or budget costs are raised in a timely manner with the senior project managers and that decisions are made to address these.
* Performance Monitoring: Monitor, audit, and challenge contractors’ performance.
* Benefit Validation: Validate the delivery of benefits for each scheme, including energy reductions and wider operational benefits.
* Compliance: Comply with all company standards and processes for asset modifications and capital governance.
* Contract Management: Manage key contracts, including scrutinising and challenging costs and scopes to achieve the best value for the company.
* Framework Development: Support the development of framework tenders and the assessment process.
* Reporting: Report monthly on programme performance against budget, milestones, and benefits delivery, and provide regular forecasts on cost, risks, and milestones.
* Energy Management Standards: Set clear energy management standards to hand over after each project.
* Project Success Reporting: Report on the success of each project delivered including development of case studies.
* Best Practice Implementation: Support the implementation of a consistent best-practice approach to energy projects.
* Knowledge Sharing: Share successes and lessons learned and recognize people and best practice.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE
The right skills and experience are important. But if you have the right character, positivity, and ‘can-do’ attitude we want to talk to you, too.
To succeed in this role, you will need evidence of delivering projects safely, to expected time, quality, and cost. Experience in planning and managing capital schemes is essential, along with contractor management experience. You should have a proven track record of engaging stakeholders to agree on clear scopes and deliver work effectively. Operational experience of pumping stations and treatment works (both clean and waste) would also be beneficial.
Additionally, you should understand asset performance and how to determine if things are working efficiently. Knowledge of energy consumption, generation, and costs is crucial.
In terms of capabilities, strong planning, prioritisation, and implementation skills are necessary. You must be able to make clear, reasoned, and well-evidenced decisions. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential for this role.
The ability to influence and manage people, both directly and in cross-functional projects, is important. You should be able to operate safely, following all Severn Trent Standards and procedures for assessing and managing health and safety risks. An understanding of energy consumption, metering, and costs is required. Strong commercial awareness and the ability to check and challenge costs and prices are also important.
Furthermore, you should have strong numerical ability, enabling you to understand performance trends and distinguish between good and bad performance. The ability to identify problems and propose possible solutions is crucial. IT skills, including proficiency in SAP, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and project management software, are necessary for this role.
Qualifications (Preferable)
* GCSE or equivalent Maths.
* A scientific or engineering qualification [desirable].
* UK Driving Licence – this role requires travel across the STW/HD regions to deliver the projects for which you are accountable.
