Community Artist Call Out – Fashion Project
We’re inviting a Community Artist to be part of a fashion project in Crawley which culminates in a Fashion Show on Saturday 12 April.
Local fashion designers Beth Williams and Sophie Merriner are curating the show with the Creative Crawley team and a group of local residents called Playmakers who are part of the Creative Playground project.
The Community Artist will work with the Playmakers to devise a workshop that can be delivered to a range of different existing community groups. The workshop should facilitate the making of a shared textile piece (blanket, banner, flag, etc.) that each community group can contribute to and which will be displayed at the fashion show.
We encourage applications from designers from all backgrounds and communities and are actively seeking designers who have lived experience of the diverse communities that live in Crawley, including those with Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chagossian, Mauritian, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, and British backgrounds.
The deadline to apply is Friday 17 January.
The workshops will be delivered in March and the beginning of April 2025.
The Brief
Working in partnership with the Fashion Show Playmakers group, the artist will create and deliver a series of workshops that facilitate the creation of a community textile piece that can be shown in the Fashion Show.
The Community Artist will also create a pack that can facilitate groups and individuals taking part without the artist being present.
The themes for the project have been developed by Playmakers who communicated a desire to include ‘Make, Do and Mend’ as an ethos for each workshop. They have also identified key themes of ‘Outside Inside’, ‘Belonging’, and ‘Journeys’. It would be helpful to see evidence in your application of how you might respond to these themes.
What is the Community Artist responsible for?
– Devising and delivering up to 10 workshops in person in Crawley
– Ensuring the final artwork created is suitable and ready for the fashion show on 12 April
– Working in partnership with Fashion Show curators Beth Williams and Sophie Merriner to ensure the Community Artwork fits into the Fashion Show and is given importance in the event.
