Role SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. As part of this, SPT Strategic Projects will be delivering a £2.4b portfolio of new overhead lines and new and upgraded substations, including design, engineering, construction and electrical works. The ‘Risk Management Lead’ is a critical role in SPT Strategic Projects focussing on the standup and implementation of robust Risk Management processes and ways of working across the portfolio, working as part of a multi-disciplinary PMO team and serving as the portfolio’s technical Risk expert. The Risk Management Lead will oversee all risk management activities across the projects including assessment of project risk registers developed by project Risk Managers. The role reports to the Strategic Portfolio PMO Lead. The position may require frequent travel to various locations in the UK. The individual should be prepared to manage teams working at different project locations. What you will be doing Leads the definition, implementation and continuous improvement of Risk Management standards and ways of working across the portfolio Leads the selection, procurement, configuration, and maintenance of a Risk Management tool across the portfolio. Onboards contractors and third parties into the Risk Management tool as required. Leads the recruitment, onboarding, and allocation of Risk Managers to Strategic projects and supports their professional development. Upskills Risk Managers and ensures consistent application of the Risk Management playbook across all projects in the portfolio. Generates and presents portfolio-wide risk reports and metrics, enabling data-driven decision-making. Leads the implementation of Quantitative Risk Assessments (QSRA/QCRA) across the portfolio, integrating results into planning and cost forecasts. Monitors contractor risk performance and conducts regular audits of Risk Management standards across projects. Supports projects in defining, allocating, and tracking risk contingencies, ensuring alignment with cost and schedule baselines. Attends governance meetings as required, providing expert risk-related advice, insights, and recommendations. Collaborates with Planning & Scheduling and Cost teams to ensure integration of risk impacts into baselines and forecasts. Maintains a risk lessons-learned database, ensuring recurring risks are mitigated across projects and best practices are institutionalized. Leverages data analytics and predictive modelling to identify trends, high-risk areas, and opportunities for risk reduction or cost optimization. Contributes to organizational strategy by aligning risk management practices with portfolio objectives and regulatory requirements. Contributes to the continuous improvement of the Strategic Portfolio by championing Lessons Learned and introduction of best-in class industry practices OFGEM submissions for risk management strategy and project risk registers Ensure compliance to regulatory process What you will bring Extensive experience (12 years) in risk management for large, complex EPC projects, preferably in infrastructure or energy sectors (UK transmission/distribution upgrade project experience is advantageous). Degree qualified in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Finance, Risk Management engineering, or Project Management) or equivalent qualifications (e.g. MoR or PMI-RMP)/experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, dashboards, and presentations tailored for senior stakeholders and decision-makers. Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, challenge, and drive decision-making at all levels of the organization. Proven track record in leading multidisciplinary teams and fostering collaboration across multiple projects and contractors. Experience in leading portfolio-wide risk workshops/meetings, providing strategic guidance and support to Risk Managers. Proficient in Monte Carlo simulations and Quantitative Risk Analysis (QCRA/QSRA), with experience integrating results into project planning and decision-making. Proven experience in developing and rolling out risk standards, KPIs, and playbooks across project portfolios. Knowledge of Power BI, with experience integrating risk data into portfolio-level dashboards and reports. Familiarity with NEC4 contracts, particularly in relation to risk and change management processes. Commitment to continuous improvement, with a demonstrated ability to embed lessons learned and best practices into risk management processes. Advanced proficiency in industry-standard tools and systems, including Safran Risk, Microsoft Office, and Document Management Systems. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate conflicting requirements and deliver actionable solutions in high-pressure environments. Experience in managing and mitigating portfolio-wide risks, ensuring alignment with organisational objectives and regulatory requirements. Minimum Requirements Experience in risk management within NEC3/NEC4 Engineering and Construction Contract (ECC) frameworks, ideally in large-scale Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects. Proficiency in IT systems including MS Office Suite and advanced risk management software (e.g., Safran Risk, Primavera Risk Analysis, or equivalent). Proven expertise in risk management Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with senior stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams. Degree qualified in a relevant field (e.g., Business, Finance, Risk Management engineering, or Project Management) or equivalent qualifications (e.g. MoR or PMI-RMP)/experience.
