The AHWRC is a leading practical teaching facility that holds a zoo licence and is BIAZA accredited. The herptile and invertebrate section houses seven rooms of rare species, including American alligator, Gila monster, sailfin dragons, hog island boas, indigo snake, egeria skinks, radiated tortoises, Mexican leaf frogs, and Miyako toads.
You will be expected to deliver exceptional practical teaching using a range of animal taxa, as well as contributing to the daily husbandry of the herptile section.
This is an exciting opportunity to educate the next generation of animal carers. As an instructor, you will also have input into species collection planning, enclosure design, and animal husbandry. There are multiple opportunities for CPD within the college, as well as the opportunity to attend external courses.
The post holder will teach and assess animal handling and husbandry to groups of students on the herptile and invertebrate section and will also have an active role in several conservation programmes, including the heath tiger beetle (Cicindela sylvatica) and the New Forest medicinal leech (Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus).
Candidates should be educated to at least level 3 in a relevant qualification, e.g. Animal Management. Candidates should demonstrate significant professional experience working with a range of animals, as well as a real passion and enthusiasm for animals and helping all learners to reach their maximum potential.
The post holder will hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to attain one. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and experience working in an educational setting with children that have EHCPs and additional needs.
