About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Support Worker to provide personalized care to an individual living with dysexecutive syndrome and a history of brain injury following a Diffuse Axonal Injury from a previous road traffic accident. The successful candidate will support the individual with daily routines, personal care, community engagement, and emotional well-being, ensuring their safety, comfort, and dignity are maintained at all times. A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are essential for this role, as you will be responsible for providing transportation to and from community activities and appointments.
Key Responsibilities
* Personal Care & Hygiene: Provide regular prompts and assistance with personal hygiene routines, including showering, oral care, and grooming. Ensure that the individual maintains personal cleanliness and looks after their appearance as desired.
* Medication Support: Administer medication in line with a prescribed medication plan, ensuring proper documentation and communication with medical professionals and pharmacy services. Remind and prompt the individual to take medication at appropriate times.
* Daily Routines: Assist with the planning and structuring of daily activities, including household tasks, meal preparation, and personal schedules. Maintain and follow a structured routine, ensuring clarity and consistency.
* Community Access & Engagement: Drive the individual to community activities, medical appointments, and social outings as needed, providing support during travel. Ensure safe transportation and assist in managing any anxiety or agitation during journeys.
* Cognitive and Emotional Support: Provide gentle and understanding support in managing cognitive challenges (e.g., memory loss, perseveration). Help with decision-making, offering clear, concise instructions and prompting as needed. Offer emotional support to manage anxiety, mood swings, and emotional regulation difficulties.
* Behavioral Support: Use positive behavior strategies to minimize challenging behaviors related to frustration or misunderstanding. Avoid stressful situations and help maintain calm by using clear, respectful communication.
* Safety & Risk Management: Assist with safety measures both within the home and when out in the community. Monitor for potential risks such as accidental injuries, wandering, or unsafe behaviors. Ensure that all safety equipment is maintained, and home security protocols (e.g., locking doors) are followed.
* Financial and Household Support: Support with managing finances, including assisting with daily spending decisions and reminding the individual of budgeting boundaries. Help with household chores, laundry, and keeping the environment tidy.
* Health and Well-Being Monitoring: Track physical health and wellness, including recognizing signs of fatigue, helping with fatigue management, and encouraging exercise. Monitor for any health changes, such as seizures or other medical conditions, and provide support as required.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
* Previous experience in personal care and support work, ideally working with individuals with brain injuries, cognitive impairments, or neurological conditions.
* Understanding of dysexecutive syndrome and its impact on daily living, behavior, and cognition is preferred.
* Knowledge of seizure management and epilepsy awareness.
* Full driving license and access to your own vehicle, as driving is a key aspect of the role. Business insurance for driving is required.
* Ability to follow care plans accurately and document actions clearly.
* Compassionate and patient with excellent communication skills.
* Ability to provide a calm and structured environment while managing any challenging behavior.
* Comfortable with light domestic tasks, meal preparation, and personal care assistance.
* First Aid and Health and Safety training (or willingness to undertake training).
* DBS Check (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance.
Desirable Skills
* Experience supporting individuals with mental health issues or anxiety.
* Ability to communicate in Punjabi (preferred but not essential).
* Experience with positive behavioral support techniques.
* Ability to adapt quickly and work independently in a variety of situations.
