Special Conditions: Pay claims for the actual hours worked are submitted on the last working day of the following month. A full enhanced child/adult DBS Certificate via the Disclosure and Barring Service will be required. You will need to provide an up to date DBS yourself for this role or be willing to pay for one. Flexible working arrangements, including weekends, are required for staff absences/holiday cover. Subsumed in your hourly rate is a 13% allowance in respect of annual leave & bank holiday entitlement (6.8 weeks), based on the pro rata basis in line with the Working Time Regulations 1998.
Key Duties
* To care for small and large animals within the College Animal Unit, to include feeding, cleaning, administration of medication as required, monitoring health and record keeping, in conjunction with the Head of Department and Animal Units Supervisor;
* To assist with the safety, cleanliness and general upkeep of the Animal Unit, in line with Health and Safety Regulations;
* To assist with the preparation of equipment, supplies and materials for practical classes as required;
* To be able to liaise with Animal Unit teaching staff to effectively work around students during their practical's and in line with the requirements of the College;
* To contribute to the development of the unit, in conjunction with the Head of Department and Animal Units Supervisor;
* To function as an effective team member within the Department, ensuring effective handovers and liaison with other School Technicians;
* To provide support/cover for the weekday Animal Studies Technicians;
* You will be expected to be fully conversant with the College's range of equality and diversity and safeguarding policies and procedures, to ensure the health, safety and welfare of learners and staff;
* To participate in the College's Appraisal scheme and if necessary, undertake further professional development in line with the needs of the College;
* To perform any other duties commensurate with grade and status as may reasonably be requested;
* There will be an opportunity for the right candidate to undertake some Instructing with students on a part-time hourly paid basis, but this is not an essential requirement of the role.

The person we are hoping to appoint will meet all the following essential requirements and some or all of the desirable requirements.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
* Broad knowledge and experience of caring for a range of animal species;
* A keen interest in animals;
* Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the animals in the unit;
* Self-motivated with the ability to work on own initiative in an unsupervised capacity;
* Ability to keep accurate husbandry records relating to the management of animals in the unit;
* Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise work to meet tight deadlines;
* Ability to work effectively as a team member;
* Ability to work around, and assist with if necessary, students with a wide range of abilities and needs;
* Good interpersonal skills;
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
* First Aid qualification (or willing to work towards);
* Experience of dealing with people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities;
* Full driving licence;
