The Role
Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council are looking to recruit to the post of Policy & Scrutiny Support Officer, a varied role that sits at the forefront of delivering on the Council’s key ambitions and supporting vital quality assurance processes. The role sits in the broader Policy and Scrutiny team which has responsibilities around Resident Engagement and the Equalities agenda, Corporate Performance reporting, Business Planning, and the Council’s Scrutiny function, alongside wider improvement support to services across all areas of the Council.
The team’s work is dynamic, with recent key pieces of work including developing an Anti-Poverty Strategy, leading an ongoing programme of Scrutiny transformation, supporting Children’s Services with their Improvement journey, and writing the Council’s new Corporate Plan.
The role provides essential support to the Policy and Scrutiny service with a number of key responsibilities including conducting research and providing advice in areas related to policy, performance, and scrutiny, supporting delivery of the Council’s quarterly performance reporting and ongoing equalities and resident engagement exercises, and supporting the Scrutiny Manager in the delivery of the Scrutiny work programme and in running meetings of the Scrutiny Panels. The role also supports the Policy and Scrutiny team to drive forward wider transformation and improvement work with services across all areas of the Council, including in high profile areas such as Children’s Services.
The post holder will report to the Senior Policy Officer and will be confident engaging with and providing robust advice to a range of stakeholders including residents, senior officers, and elected members, and will work professionally and impartially in a political environment.
About You
You will be enthusiastic and self-motivated, able to work both independently and within a small team, and with a good understanding of the work of local government and the current challenges faced by residents and public services in Tameside. You will have experience developing and maintaining professional relationships and partnerships, supporting meetings and taking minutes, organising and analysing complex information, and communicating effectively to different audiences.You will be competent with the use of IT software including the Microsoft Office suite of programs, social media, and other communication tools. As an active and engaged member of the Council’s Policy and Scrutiny team you will be confident when working across all areas of the Council and with our partner organisations, able to provide sound and evidenced advice, and willing to take the initiative to share ideas and influence the decision-making process.
Qualification to degree level isn’t essential but equivalent experience is desirable.
