Role Overview: As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (SEMH), you will play a crucial role in providing tailored support to students with SEMH needs, helping them build confidence, develop coping strategies and succeed academically. Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff, you will assist in delivering engaging lessons, providing one-to-one and small-group interventions and fostering a positive, supportive classroom environment. Key Responsibilities of the Graduate Teaching Assistant (SEMH): Provide academic, emotional and behavioural support to students with SEMH needs, helping them overcome challenges and engage in learning. Assist in the planning and delivery of tailored interventions and activities to meet individual learning and emotional needs. Foster a nurturing and structured environment, promoting positive behaviour and resilience in students. Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to implement personalised learning strategies. Support students in managing their emotions and developing positive coping mechanisms. Build strong and trusting relationships with students, acting as a role model and mentor. Monitor and report on students’ progress, ensuring they receive the necessary support to achieve their potential. Encourage students to develop self-confidence, social skills and a sense of belonging within the school community. Requirements of Graduate Teaching Assistant (SEMH): A relevant degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work, or a related field (preferred but not essential). Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with SEMH needs, autism, or behavioural challenges (desirable). A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable students and helping them reach their full potential. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and staff. A patient, empathetic and resilient approach to working with children facing emotional and social difficulties. A willingness to undertake training and develop skills in behaviour management and SEMH support. An understanding of safeguarding procedures and the ability to promote a safe learning environment. Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
