The post holder will work closely with the Senior Sister in managing the Endocrine Department. He/she will work collaboratively with the Senior Sister and other Staff in the department, providing appropriate cover in the absence of the senior sister and providing leadership within the department.
He/she is responsible for the care of patients and carers within a recognized framework in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust policies and Health and Safety Legislation. Develop and provide nurse led services, including telephone clinics, and contributing to education and training programs for other staff members.

CLINICAL:
• Assessment of the needs of the patient and family, ensuring the provision of patient centered care which focuses on the promotion of health as well as illness.
• Ensure accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
• Enhance care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.
• To be responsible for endocrine patients continued education programs.
• Upon completion of defined training and competencies, be responsible for review of patients with established endocrine conditions within nurse led clinics, in line with departmental protocols and guidelines. For example, Growth Hormone Clinic.
• Develop and provide nurse led services eg injection clinics
• Perform endocrine tests and administer specialized treatments according to protocols.
• Provide an advisory service to patients and where appropriate bring problems to the attention of the medical staff.
• Respond to telephone queries from patients and staff develop with the senior sister telephone review clinics for a certain sub set of patients
• Maintain safe practice according to Trust policies and standards.
• Prescribe medications per trust non-medical prescribing (NMP) policy.
MANAGERIAL:
• When appropriate, take charge of the Department in the absence of the Senior Sister, ensuring that standards of care and department management are maintained.
• Help to foster a supportive working environment and maintenance of staff morale, promoting a culture in which staff feel valued and able to reach their potential.
• Act as a preceptor/mentor to new Department staff, registered nurses, student nurses, medical staff and cadets in training
• Work with Senior Sister to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participate in audit of clinical care.
• Be aware of responsibilities with regard to Health and Safety at Work Act. Maintain and develop an environment and culture that improves health, safety and security.
• Support the Senior Sister in initiating and implementing change, and in promoting an awareness of professional accountability.
• Support the Senior Sister in the recruitment and selection of new staff to the clinical area.
• Actively participate in risk assessments and ensure correct completion of Incident Report Forms in accordance with Trust policy. Actively participate in the completion and delivery of local standard operating procedures.
• Ensure procedures carried out are appropriately supervised and that training needs are met.
• Support the management of junior staff
• Develop and update protocols and patient information documents .
EDUCATION:
• Develop and participate in education programmes for nursing and medical staff.
• Work with others to develop, identify and implement appropriate learning opportunities.
• Contribute to an environment that encourages and promotes learning and development.
• Supervise nursing staff and disseminate knowledge and current developments.
• Ensure own learning and development needs are met.
• Highlight areas of improvement and development within the Department.
• Assist in the implementation of new practices, undertaking audit work to ensure that working practice is evidence based.
• Ensure own Essential Training is kept up to date by completing appropriate training packages.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
• In consultation with the Senior Sister agree learning objectives designed to meet the goals of personal and professional development and undergo appropriate programmes of study.
• Gain teaching skills by undertaking a teaching and assessing course and applying the principles in the clinical setting.
• At the request of the Senior Sister accept responsibility to develop managerial skills within the clinical setting.
• To attend and take part in leading team meetings as required.
• To actively seek mentorship/supervision to enable development and reflection within the role.
• Contribute to improvement of services.
• Contribute to improving quality.
• Promote equality and diversity.
• Attending MDT’s within the trust and at other trusts as appropriate.
• Consenting patients for endocrine tests.
• Attend conferences and study days.
• Work towards the Endocrine Nurses Certificate.
