At RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, Serco has been providing multi-activity and engineering support since 1997. Serco proudly supports the RAF and MoD, supplying around 20 different services onsite, from engine and aircraft maintenance, to fuelling and ground control services. RAF Brize Norton is the largest operating base within the Royal Air Force, providing air transport and air-to-air refuelling to the RAF fleet, and as a Structures Bay Technician/Supervisor, you will contribute enormously to the vital work carried out here. You’ll also be part of the wider team, with 5,800 service personnel, 1,200 contractors and 300 civil servants on site.
The bay is responsible for RAF Brize Norton C-17 aircraft structural and composite repairs, metal fabrication, and damage assessments. Work is carried out within the structures bay and on the aircraft, both in the hangar and on the line. This includes carbon fibre/fibreglass wet lay-ups, heat treating, scarfing, blending, marking up/measuring, cutting, drilling, curing with hot bonder, sanding on/off aircraft (setting up of breathing equipment on aircraft), riveting, counter sinking, metal work fabrication including the use of workshop machinery. The team are required to work at height and in confined spaces on the C17 aircraft. The team also deliver Composite awareness briefs to RAF Brize Norton station personnel as required.

5 shifts one week 4 shifts the next week (flexible day off decided by the Team Leader)

Standby and overtime as required.
Main Accountabilities:
- Current working knowledge and experience of Aircraft Structural Metal rectification on aircraft and in the bay environment. Including damage assessment, frame skin replacements, fuselage damage repairs, structural component changes, corrosion removal, manufacture of repair parts, drilling, countersinking, riveting, close tolerance work and bolting of replacement parts.
- Sheet metal fabrication experience within aerospace industry using aluminium, stainless steel and titanium.
- Competency to operate workshop machines and hand tools used in airframe structural work.
- Ability to read and understand structural repair drawings and instructions.
- Ensure that all repairs and rectification tasks are correctly certified and that records of maintenance carried out are correct and complete. Report to the Structures Bay Manager any condition of the aircraft (or component), which could hazard safety.
- Desirable but not essential as training will be provided, current working knowledge and experience of advanced composite repairs within aerospace industry. Including but not limited to, carbon and fibreglass wet layups, vacuum bagging, hot bonder curing, damage assessment and removal, scarfing, honeycomb core replacement, surface preparation and adhesive preparation and use.

- supervise, inspect, certify the work, and ensure the completeness of the metal repair tasks.
- Ensure that all Health and Safety precautions are adhered to and that your PPE is serviceable and worn correctly when carry out a task.
- Notify the Serco Structures Bay Team Leader, whenever deficiencies emerge that require their attention in respect of safety, risk compliance, airworthiness and engineering standards.
- Effectively contribute to continuous improvement to ensure their drive for effectiveness, efficiency and improvements in the output and working environment.
- Ensure good maintenance practices are in place and where appropriate compliance with Military Aviation Authority requirements.
- Ensure their continued competence by completing appropriate continuation training and human factors training so they remain authorised, competent, qualified so they can plan, perform, supervise, inspect, certify the work and complete the task. Ensure that their record of training and experience is kept and available for update and review.
- Must implement and promote a “Zero Harm” Open Reporting Safety Culture where all individuals are willing and able to report any issue or event which they believe has or could potentially lead to a Safety risk.
- Must ensure that they deliver effective, efficient, “right first time every time” output to our customers.
- Deliver Continuous Improvement to drive for effectiveness, efficiency and improvements in the output and working environment.
- Due to the nature of the role, you must be able to achieve MoD Security Clearance.
What you’ll need to do the role:
- Will have successfully completed a recognised Civilian Engineering or Aviation BTEC/ONC/ NVQ Level 3, or equivalent, or military course in Aircraft Engineering.
- Experience of aircraft structural metal rectification on aircraft and in the bay environment. Sheet metal fabrication within aerospace industry.
- Functional IT skills – Office 365 applications.
- Must have high standards of oral and written communication skills.
