Clinical Support Worker - Anticoagulation
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021.

Job overview
The post holder will support the Anticoagulation service in carrying out blood sampling and testing for housebound clients, this will involve direct care with clients (within their own homes, or care homes) who have been admitted to the care of Anticoagulation Service. They will also be required to support the Anticoagulation Nurses in providing sampling and testing of blood within the anticoagulation clinics held in various sites across Walsall.
Main duties of the job
1. To carry out phlebotomy duties within Community setting working within outlined lower-level clinical competencies and Trust protocols, as directed by the CNS anticoagulation.
2. To undertake testing of blood using Near Patient testing equipment and be responsible for documenting findings.
3. To independently travel to various clinics and to patient’s home environments to undertake sampling and testing as required.
4. To inform the nursing team of all changes in relation to patient care.
5. To correctly identify patients and to label blood samples obtained appropriately.
6. Demonstrate excellent communication skills with clients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
7. Maintain excellent written and electronic patient records.
8. To undertake appropriate risk assessments and take the appropriate action which may avoid foreseeable harm occurring to patients in their own home.
Person specification
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent qualification and/or relevant experience.
* Current experience of working within health/social care setting.
* Evidence of experience of near patient testing.
* Recent experience of taking capillary blood samples.
* Full Clean Driving License.
* Ability to travel across the Borough during the working day.
* Fully trained and skilled in performing Venepuncture.
* Recent phlebotomy experience in a clinical environment.
* Awareness of the anatomy and physiology relating to venepuncture and safe practice.
