Job summary
We are welcoming applications for the role of Consultant Biomedical Scientist, to join the current team, which is comprised of six substantive consultants.
The post is full-time, although any candidate unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post.
The candidate will carry out a variety of complex analytical procedures on a range of clinical specimens and will make interpretative judgements using postgraduate level knowledge of histopathology including focused knowledge of a specific tissue specialty e.g. Dermatopathology.
Main duties of the job
1. Contribute to the histology workload of the department by reporting histopathology cases using the current LIMS to enter and authorise pathology reports.
2. Interpret and report the microscopic histopathology of a full range of specimens at consultant level in your specialist area to arrive at independent diagnosis.
3. Refer cases for specialist opinion when outside your own area of competency.
4. Take joint or sole responsibility for leading the pathology contribution to one or more cancer multidisciplinary team meetings.
5. Liaise with medical staff and clinical teams in specified specialties according to individual qualifications, and other postgraduate activities of the trust.
6. Participate in the teaching, audit and other professional activities of the department including internal and external quality assurance programmes.
7. Participate in departmental and trust clinical governance programmes to ensure that the clinical governance needs of the organisation are met.
8. Participate in the Royal College of Pathologists' continuing professional development (CPD) programme, or equivalent.
9. Participate in regular job appraisal processes, both as an appraiser and appraisee.
10. Participate in relevant management meetings and contribute to the strategic planning of the department and organisation.

Qualifications, Specific Experience & Training
Essential
* Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histopathology Reporting (equivalent to FRCPath)
* Completion of Stage D training certificate from The Royal College of Pathologists (equivalent to FRCPath)
* Diplomateship of the Royal College of Pathologists
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist
* MSc (or equivalent) in relevant specialty
* Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
Desirable
* IBMS Diploma of Expert practice in Histological Dissection
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
* Minimum 48 months dissection and reporting experience including cancer resections working as the equivalent of a mono specialist Consultant Histopathologist
* Evidence of participation in Consultant Histopathologist EQA and Tissue-I EQA demonstrating equivalent level of expert practice
* Competency assessments for RCPath specimen types D and E in all other specialties completed
* Evidence of training Biomedical Scientists and junior medical staff
* Experience of leadership and management within a Pathology setting
* Evidence of comprehensive CPD portfolio in relevant specialty
* Up to date knowledge of Royal College of Pathologists guidelines for specimen dissection
* Up to date knowledge of Evidence based national and international patient care pathways within relevant specialty
* Understanding of H&S requirements in laboratory
* Understanding UKAS ISO15189:2012 standards for laboratory accreditation
* Macroscopic and microscopic tissue recognition and diagnosis of normal and diseased tissues
* Evidence of ability to order appropriate ancillary tests (e.g. immunohistochemistry and molecular tests) and of adding technical and approved clinically relevant comments to clinical reports where appropriate
* Able to produce high quality macroscopic descriptions and microscopy reports for clinicians in all Trusts in a timely fashion meeting departmental KPI's
* Autonomy in dissection of surgical specimens (Category A-E)
* Able to manage and prioritise the work of the dissection room
* Assessment of the suitability of set procedures for any given specimen and using judgement to carry out alternatives
* Able to organise own workload and do so under pressure
* Able to obtain appropriate biological control material, use of other specific control measures where appropriate and complete the validation of such material
