The Principal Systems Engineer (software) will possess a strong analytical and software engineering background to play a lead role in the design and development of LB Foster’s High Integrity products for Safety and Surveillance applications.
The role requires coordinating colleagues from related disciplines, to develop the teamwork and skill sets required to deliver challenging and complex software-defined data-driven, real-world, real-time systems.
Indicative Responsibilities Include:
1. Lead on all aspects of system engineering for safety, surveillance, and monitoring products.
2. Specify, architect, and lead the implementation and testing of system software to an extremely high standard.
3. Develop and maintain system requirements and architectures.
4. Contribute to the road-mapping, scoping, design and planning of new products and revisions.
5. Contribute to design and implementation of scientific algorithms for processing real-time data.
6. Prepare technical documentation: designs, release notes, manuals.
7. Adopt, evolve, and apply correct process, control, and procedure to development activities.
8. Own relationships with external contractors where the company does not possess suitable skills in-house.
9. Contribute to the capturing of new business requirements.
10. Act as a subject matter expert for internal and external projects as required.
11. All other duties as assigned.
Experience, Education & License Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in systems or software engineering or related equivalent experience.
2. Relevant qualification in Mathematics or Physics e.g. A Level or similar.
3. Demonstrable experience of delivering a product certified for safety under IEC 61508 or derivatives.
4. Current working knowledge of software quality assurance including automated unit testing, static analysis, formal methods.
5. Deep understanding of the use of software for real-time scientific analysis.
6. Expertise and success in delivering projects in a recognised Product Development Process.
7. Experience with software project planning aids and tracking tools.
8. Experienced with waterfall and agile design methodologies.
Skills & Abilities:
1. Strong software background.

3. Ability to demystify complex technical content for non-technical internal and client stakeholders.
4. Ability to challenge proposed approaches, working towards better standards with the team.
5. Practical software coding experience utilising C, C++.
6. Familiarity with the following non-exhaustive list of technologies; MISRA C, POSIX compliant OS (Linux, QNX), DevOps, Netbeans, Eclipse.
7. Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure product stack and tools.
8. Possess the scientific skills required to contribute to solutions which rely heavily on scientific analysis of real-time data.
9. Working knowledge of IoT and remote condition monitoring technologies.
