What's involved with this role: Temporary Public & Green Spaces Operator/Coordinator – Manual Labour Job Ref: Exeter TCL 5253911 & 5253910 Pay Rate: £12.00 per hour PAYE Hours per week: 37 Monday – Sunday, 5am to 6pm shift work Role Length: This opening assignment is for up to 4-5 months City: Exeter, Devon Candidates must be prepared to work out of normal working hours when required Shifts begin between 05.00 and 07.00, finish between 13.00 and 18.00 covering 5 out of 7 days, dependent on the role. The purpose of the role is to undertake cleansing and grounds maintenance services to keep the city looking good. Key responsibilities: Support team leaders by providing on site skills and work organisation of complex tasks, particularly within the commercial and reactive teams. Taking the initiative in delivering tasks that require higher levels of decision- making, for example working around unexpected circumstances to prevent delay, and sourcing materials and equipment outside the normal range of maintenance tasks. Undertake specialist cleansing and ground maintenance activities using large scale, specialist plant and equipment across the city where trained and when demand dictates including: grass cutting using ride-on or tractor mounted equipment; grave digging with excavators; hedge cutting using tractor mounted equipment; landscape construction and repair; mechanical sweeping using large mechanical sweepers; ground clearance works using chainsaws; specialised works in such areas as play equipment maintenance; LGV driving; commercial works to contract specifications Undertake less specialist cleansing and ground maintenance tasks where directed to meet demand including: grounds maintenance and vegetation management tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, shrub bed maintenance etc. Respond to and resolve issues that arise on a daily basis and to report and help support Public and Green Space Team leaders to resolve complex issues. Inform members of the public, businesses and Public and Green Space Commercial customers about your work and help them with their queries or complaints. Undertake work in a safe and effective manner at all times and to achieve consistently good performance, following City Council policies and procedures, and to be responsible for your safety and that of the public. Undertake basic recording of information e.g. Play equipment checks, Personal Protective equipment site condition and compliance checks; utilising council templates and IT solutions. Undertake training on the safe use of equipment and safe working practices and to support Public and Green Space Operatives by conducting tool box training on equipment safe use in accordance with the Council’s Health and Safety training policy. Work flexibly at evening and weekend when required to meet the demand of the service. Qualifications: Good general standard of education to GCSE standard in two suitable subjects (Maths and English preferred). Skills & Experience: Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation. Must have gardening/horticultural experience. Knowledge of health and safety regulations and requirements Evidence of training in areas such as chainsaw operation and use of specialist machinery Relevant certificates for use of relevant types of equipment, eg LANTRA. Experience of identifying and implementing practical on-site solutions within the Public Realm. Experience of assessing and implementing appropriate Risk Management to a range of differing locations and circumstances. Experience of specialist cleansing or grounds maintenance services activities. Experience of operating a wide range of specialist cleansing or grounds maintenance equipment such as large ride-on sweepers, hydraulically powered tractor mounted equipment’s and HGVs. Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite). Full UK driving licence.
