We are recruiting a Business Development Manager to focus on our Infrastructure, Energy and Natural Resources practice group (IEN).
IEN is a priority growth area for the firm and the IEN group is recognised as an industry leader and innovator, breaking new ground on energy transition transactions and earning an international reputation for exceptional legal service. The team frequently works on complex, innovative or “first-of-a-kind” projects. Recent mandates include acting on some of the first low carbon hydrogen and carbon capture and storage projects, new and existing nuclear power projects and innovative energy storage projects.
The manager will sit within, and work with, the wider Global Client Development team (GCD), supporting Practice partners on their strategic BD planning, initiatives and campaigns. The GCD team forms part of the Commercial team which sits within the wider Business Services function.
The successful candidate will report into the Senior Business Development Manager for Finance and co-manage a BD Executive who supports IEN and our Sustainability Group. The IEN group is supported by a dedicated Knowledge team and, on a day-to-day basis, the successful candidate will work closely with the Head of IEN Knowledge and other team members, working collaboratively to drive forward client cross-selling and targeting initiatives, deepen client relationships and deliver innovative content and event campaigns.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES //
The key responsibilities of the IEN BD Manager are set out below; there may be others which are not listed.
This is a hybrid role with an expectation to be in the office three days a week (with a requirement for four days during the probationary period) and the successful candidate may require some working outside our normal working hours of 9:30am to 5:30pm.
The BD Manager will be responsible for building relationships across multiple jurisdictions and practice streams, working closely with partners and the Knowledge team to advance their BD initiatives, campaigns and projects for the firm as well as supporting our IEN practice group:
* BD lead for the cross-stream IEN practice group, working closely with partners and the IEN Knowledge team to drive forward BD initiatives and the strategy. Develop individual relationships with partners, supporting them on their personal BD activity including conducting monthly meetings with each partner and owning the agenda.
* Work directly with the relevant practice partners and the Knowledge team to shape business plans, ensuring that these are focused and considered.
* Provide focus to new client acquisition initiatives including the identification of appropriate targets and the appropriate routes to market.
* Ensure BD initiatives and campaigns have a multi-practice and global approach (where applicable).
* Assist partners in determining how best to respond to any given opportunity, including client and profile-raising opportunities.
* Help with the preparation of credentials and other client-facing materials as well as assisting on pitches and client BD meetings in liaison with the Pitch team.
* Work with relevant stakeholders and internal resources to manage and implement a marketing communications programme to raise the profile of the practice group.
* Work with partners, the Knowledge team and other content owners to identify possible content of interest to clients and targets and to ensure production is timely and pitched appropriately for the target audience.
* Identify the most appropriate distribution channel(s) for content and to advise on strategies to ensure that the maximum possible ROI is achieved.
* Support partners with their client relationships, ensuring they are benefitting from our marketing ecosystem and our value-added offering.
* Develop relationships with senior associates and support them on their BD activity, encouraging them to do BD and providing tips and guidance on best practice.
* Work with the Knowledge team to manage the client and target research process to ensure clear objectives are in place for each piece of research and that all research conducted is done so to meet the objectives of the IEN strategy.
* Work with partners and the Knowledge team to design and shape events ensuring that seminars and client events are relevant and targeted appropriately. Provide advice as to the format and follow up of events to ensure maximum ROI.
* Demonstrate excellent communication skills in proactively updating partners and relevant stakeholders on BD/Marketing activity that is taking place across the group and the wider firm, joining dots and sharing information that ensures greater awareness and drives activity.
CANDIDATE PROFILE //
Candidates for this position must have:
* Degree-educated or equivalent industry experience.
* Strong BD and Marketing experience, most recently at a senior executive or manager level in legal or professional services.
* Ability and willingness to take the initiative and challenge the status quo.
* Proven ability to manage multiple deliverables within a tight timeframe and deliver high quality work, both individually and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
* A self-starter with a proactive approach to identifying opportunities, solving problems, and driving business development initiatives to achieve tangible outcomes.
* Demonstrable confidence to develop strong working relationships with the partners, associates, Knowledge lawyers and all members of the BD team.
* Ability to actively collaborate with colleagues on projects, ensuring timely completion of assigned tasks while maintaining high quality standards and open communication.
* Ability to manage and analyse large amounts of data and identify BD opportunities within it.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to confidently engage with senior stakeholders and deliver high-quality pitches, presentations, and proposals.
