Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust incorporates a dedicated Day Surgery (DSU) and Same Day Admissions Unit (SDAU) and is seeking highly motivated individuals with surgical nursing experience to join the leadership of our dynamic team in providing, ensuring and improving a high standard of care to all our patients.
The Day Surgery Unit currently consists of 23 trolleys with 7 chairs caring for adult patients undergoing a wide variety of procedures under different specialities (including but not limited to: Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Gynaecology, Colorectal, Urology, General Surgery and Pain Management).
The team strive to provide high quality, safe care pre and post operatively, adopting a nurse-led discharge approach to Day Surgery to the vast majority of our patients meeting given criteria and ensuring that they are informed about their post-operative care at home.
Due to the expansion of the Day Surgery Unit, an exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 6 nurses to join the DSU leadership team.
Main duties of the job

* Keen to further their experience of leadership, have excellent communication skills and influencing skills.
* Able to motivate a team, and work with the team, to develop the Day Surgery Unit to ensure that patients receive the best standards of care and experience whilst in our care.
* To be the ward representative when the Senior Sister is unavailable.
DSU is a nurse led unit, and as such, proven competence in nurse led discharge is an essential criteria for the role.

Clinical
* To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of patients, incorporating the standards and philosophy of the ward and evidence based research.
* Organise method of care delivery within the ward/department, allocating, prioritising and delegating effectively. This includes responding to capacity and patient dependency requirements.
* Maximise opportunities for health promotion and education.
* To act as a resource person to others providing information to junior staff, multidisciplinary team (MDT) members, patients and relatives.
* To maintain accurate and comprehensive records of patient care.

* To be responsible for the day to day running of the ward in the absence of the ward manager.

* Using professional judgement ensure optimal bed usage/patient throughput at all times, facilitating timely admission and discharge of patients.
Service Management
* To assist when necessary with the definition of nursing standards and maintain the provision and effectiveness of those standards in line with clinical governance.
* The post holder will ensure that they are aware of all issues relating to Clinical Governance, Quality Assurance and Clinical Effectiveness and that they carry out their duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards.
* To assist when necessary with the initiation and evaluation of any projects or research appropriate to the services provided within the ward in line with clinical governance.
Education
* To help to create and maintain an environment conducive to development and learning for all staff.
* To assist in identifying the need for, and providing training/education in clinical nursing and managerial techniques to all grades of staff.
