Job Title: Phonics Teaching Assistant (TA)

Job Purpose:
To support the teaching and learning of phonics within the classroom, working closely with teachers to improve pupils' reading, writing, and speaking skills. The Phonics TA will assist in delivering phonics sessions, provide targeted support for individual and small groups of students, and contribute to fostering a positive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Phonics Support & Delivery:
o Assist in planning and delivering phonics lessons using structured programs such as Read Write Inc., Jolly Phonics, or Letters and Sounds.
o Lead small-group phonics interventions to support struggling learners.
o Use a range of multisensory teaching techniques to enhance phonics understanding.
2. Student Support:
o Work with individual students to reinforce phonics concepts and build confidence in reading and spelling.
o Identify and support students with additional learning needs, working under the guidance of the class teacher or SENCO.
o Monitor students’ progress and provide feedback to teachers.
3. Classroom & Resource Support:
o Prepare phonics-related learning materials and resources.
o Support the maintenance of phonics displays and word walls in the classroom.
o Assist with assessment and record-keeping to track student progress.
4. Collaboration & Communication:
o Work closely with teachers and other support staff to ensure consistent phonics instruction.
o Communicate with parents/carers regarding students’ progress where required.
o Participate in training and professional development related to phonics teaching.
Person Specification:
Essential:
* Experience working with young children in an educational setting.
* Knowledge of systematic phonics programs such as Read Write Inc., Jolly Phonics, or Letters and Sounds.
* Ability to engage and motivate children in their learning.
* Strong communication and teamwork skills.
* Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive approach to supporting learning.
Desirable:
* Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant qualification).
* Experience in delivering phonics interventions.
* Understanding of SEND and strategies to support students with additional needs.
Safeguarding:
The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and adhere to the school’s safeguarding policies.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
