About the role
Submarines are some of the most complex manufactured assets in the world and as such provide interesting, challenging, and rewarding work for the people that design, build and support them through life. As a Senior Naval Architect in our expanding Submarine Naval Architecture Team, you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects across the lifecycle of these submarine assets for both our UK and international customers.
As a member of the team, you will get involved in solving engineering challenges through leading the development and delivery of the Naval Architectural aspects of our projects. The projects will range from supporting our international customers in procuring new submarines that meet their needs to improving the safety and availability of UK submarines through the delivery of feasibility studies, technical engineering investigations, analyses, and design changes.
More specifically, you may expect to gain experience in the following areas:
1. Undertaking Surveys on submarines to support design changes
2. 3D modelling and naval architectural calculations to support concept design development and design changes
3. Structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis
4. Stability assessments using the Paramarine Naval Architecture software
5. Hydrodynamic assessments using in-house tools and Computational Fluid Dynamics
6. Independent technical assurance of new submarine designs
7. Engineering assessments to support submarine life extensions
8. Secondments to industry and the UK MOD to broaden your experience
Research and development is also at the heart of what we do and you will have the opportunity to support enhancing global understanding of submarine naval architecture issues, the development of future submarine design concepts, as well as the development of new capabilities, tools, and processes.
As a member of the Naval Architecture Business Unit, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of projects across our full portfolio, such as surface ships, allowing you to broaden your experience outside of submarines should you wish to. The role is based at our offices in Bath, UK, and occasional travel may be required to customer sites both in the UK and overseas.
While the role is nominally based at our offices in Bath, we would be happy to discuss working patterns, hours, and location. We do have offices in Bristol, Glasgow, London, Plymouth, and Southampton. This role is available part-time, job-share, or full-time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognize that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.
About you
To be successful in the role, you will be someone who thrives on new challenges, is motivated by variety, and has a strong desire to build on your experience and have:
1. A HNC/HND/Foundation Degree or Bachelors/Masters degree or postgraduate qualification in Naval Architecture or a similar subject
2. Practical and relevant experience of conventional or nuclear submarine Naval Architecture
3. Chartered Engineer status with membership of a recognised professional body or a demonstrable route to achieving this
4. Experience of liaising with customers to understand their requirements and producing statements of work or proposals that deliver innovative solutions
5. Good analytical and problem-solving skills with experience of leading technical projects to time, cost, and quality through excellent organisational skills despite competing priorities
6. Good interpersonal skills with experience of communicating your work to all levels of stakeholders in a clear and concise manner through meetings, written reports, and/or presentations
7. Flexibility to be deployed on a range of projects and customer sites
8. Experience of project management with a recognised project management qualification (desirable)
9. Experience of leading and line managing less experienced members of staff, supporting the technical delivery of their work and their ongoing professional development (desirable)
The successful candidates will need to hold, or be eligible to obtain, UK security clearance at SC level. Missing skills? Let us be the judge! BMT is passionate about people; we recognize that technology moves quickly and that no one can learn everything, which is why we seek those who can adapt and demonstrate the aptitude to learn. With enthusiasm and the right attitude, we can help you discover your potential.
