JOB TITLE: Senior Commercial Manager
REPORTING TO: Head of Commercial
The Role
You will be responsible for managing commercial operations. The role includes minimising costs, particularly in relation to the requirements of the NEC4 contracts under which our major projects are contracted, as well as mitigating risks on mission-critical projects while ensuring quality and value for money. You will lead a team of Quantity Surveyors and Buyers, implement commercial best practices, and develop cost templates to ensure consistency across the business.
You will also be involved in reviewing tenders for risks and opportunities, managing sub-contractor and client variations, and ensuring compliance with contract requirements. Additionally, you will monitor project costs, submit client applications for payment, and manage the payment process for sub-contractors and clients. Regular site visits will be required to assess project progress.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage costs and risks for critical projects, ensuring compliance with required standards.
* Lead and develop a commercial team.
* Review tenders, manage variations, and ensure contract compliance.
* Monitor project costs and oversee payment processes.
* Undertake regular site visits to assess project progress and financial performance, including contract variations.
* Identify and mitigate financial risks on live projects.
* Ensure effective management and motivation of staff and direct reports to optimise performance.
* Develop and maintain an effective supply chain for the delivery of goods and services.
* Build strong relationships with key suppliers to enhance project delivery and efficiency.
* Improve processes and systems to ensure on-time delivery and cost efficiency.
* Identify and implement corrective actions to address delivery issues.
* Capture cost movements and update estimating templates for future projects.
* Take the Commercial Lead role on major data centre projects.
* Allocate commercial resources to project teams in liaison with the Head of Commercial.
* Draft NEC4 sub-contracts for issue to the supply chain where appropriate.
* Report through cost plan templates, managing project margins and financial contributions.
* Provide input into the pricing of proposals and tenders.
* Ensure contractual compliance with NEC mechanisms and timescales.
* Implement and manage Commercial SOPs.
* Work alongside the Head of Commercial to identify and apply departmental process improvements.
* Attend operational, project review, and health & safety meetings as required.
* Contribute to the development of BladeRoom products and delivery methods.
* Enhance knowledge of BladeRoom factory production methods and materials.
* Mentor and support junior team members, fostering autonomy.
* Conduct supply chain visits to manufacturing premises or offices.
* Assist with pricing projects and estimating support where required.
* Review cost plans for accuracy before bid submissions.
* Ensure compliance with health & safety standards within the business.
Person Specification
KNOWLEDGE
• Understanding of NEC Contracts.
• Strong commercial supply chain and management expertise.
• Ability to manage operational aspects of Quality, Cost, Delivery, and People.
• Good people management skills.
EXPERIENCE
* Experience in the administration of NEC Contracts.
* Background in construction with a proven track record in commercial management and/or a strong QS background.
* Proven experience in managing the commercial aspects of a business.
* Demonstrated ability to deliver performance in operations related to Quality, Cost, Delivery, and People.
