Consultants working in Wales work to a salary range of £91,722 - £119,079 per annum (as at 2024) with a further remuneration per annum in commitment awards when eligible.

Main duties of the job
This is a permanent Consultant post specialising in major trauma joining a team of 25 Consultants based in the Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery (WCBPS) at Morriston Hospital, Swansea. The post holder will become part of the acute trauma on call. The post holder will be expected to become an integral part of the pelvioncology reconstructive service having completed a period of advanced training in the field mentored by our current senior surgeon.
As the Adult Burns Centre for the South West Burn Care Network, the Swansea Burn Centre regularly receives severely injured adult patients from outside Wales for acute management. The Centre also provides Centre-level care for adult patients and Unit level burn care for paediatric patients from South & Mid-Wales. The burns centre is currently re-locating care for critically injured patients to purpose built accommodation within the General ITU footprint. Low dependency adult patients are managed on a 10 bedded ward and paediatric patients are managed on the general paediatric unit.
Working for our organisation
The plastic surgery service covers all the acute hospitals in South Wales, serving a population of 2.3M people. We are the only providers of plastic surgery located in Wales; the population of North Wales receiving their services from units in North West England.
The facilities available on the Morriston site include low-dependency beds, a flap-monitoring unit and a dedicated outpatients facility. Dedicated Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services are available. There is a dedicated Plastics Surgery Treatment Centre located adjacent to the elective ward, which provides planned day case treatment for local anaesthetic cases in two operating rooms.
Within Swansea Bay Health Board, we are reconfiguring our services to ensure they remain safe and sustainable in the future, andthere may be occasions when you will be requested to work at other locations within SBU Health board. Following consultation, the Heath Board may require you to work in any of its locations, in accordance with the needs of the service. An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the consultant team at the Welsh Centre of Burns and Plastic Surgery, based at Swansea Bay University Health Board.
We are looking to recruit a keen and enthusiastic new colleague to join our friendly, forward-thinking teams in Orthoplastics & Pelvioncology/Trunk Reconstruction. They will join MDTs in both orthoplastics and pelvioncology. There will also be an element of general plastic surgery work, including skin cancer. The post holder will join the Plastic surgery on call rota, until such time as an orthoplastic on call rota at the Major Trauma Centre is developed. This is a full-time substantive Consultant post based at Morriston Hospital but working across the Swansea Bay University Health board sites. The successful candidate will join a team of 25 plastic and reconstructive surgeons responsible for the provision of Burns and Plastic Surgical services for the population of South Wales.
The MTC is based in the University Hospital Wales and was opened in 2020. It sees over 180 new orthoplastics injuries a year and currently, although many cases can be managed on site, operates a hub and spoke model for complex free tissue reconstruction. The candidate will join a team of 5 substantive consultants with different skill sets who are committed to providing quality orthoplastic care to the welsh population.
The pelvioncology component of the post is to replace the out-going consultant who will help train the successful candidate prior to retirement. Approximately 25-30 cases are managed a year in a well-functioning and friendly MDT.
