Senior Estimator
Glasgow
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland. But that’s what’s behind every job at Scottish Water.
Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap – and from sewer to treatment plant. Want to join us? We are looking for 2 Senior Estimators to join our Cost Intelligence Team.
The Cost Intelligence Team provides cost and carbon insights upon which the wider business can confidently act to achieve our strategic ambitions and deliver value to our customers. The dedicated estimating teams price and assure projects throughout the investment lifecycle to support a value for money programme with data being at the heart of what we do.
The location will be flexible and includes hybrid working but will be based in one of our 4 Regional Hub locations at FMH (Edinburgh), The Bridge (Glasgow), Bullion House (Dundee) or Henderson Drive (Inverness).
What you’ll do
1. You’ll be responsible for estimating and validating project costs for the programme and delivery teams, ensuring Capital Programme consistently demonstrates value for money.
2. You’ll support and mentor a small team of estimators, planning and allocating work effectively to assist the Estimating Team manager. You’ll build strong relationships and work collaboratively with our internal and external customers to agree estimates required for projects throughout the project lifecycle using our corporate estimating system.
3. You’ll play a role in driving continuous improvement by developing and refining processes, ensuring your team follows them and applies appropriate pricing methodologies. You’ll also ensure projects comply with all data and cost capture rules, as well as the requirements of the delivery vehicle contracts.
What you’ll need
1. You’ll bring proven experience in project and programme estimating, coupled with strong negotiating skills and solid commercial acumen.
2. You should have a good understanding of the NEC suite of contracts and its principles, along with construction experience to help you tackle issues with confidence.
3. While a good knowledge of Water & Wastewater processes and their asset hierarchies would be beneficial, a solid grasp of construction Methods of Measurement is essential.
4. You’ll need to demonstrate you’ve built sustainable relationships and collaborated effectively with a variety of stakeholders in the past.
5. You will have the confidence and ability to influence conversations with technical and complex content to reach mutually beneficial outcomes.
6. Your knowledge and experience will be anchored by excellent communication and reporting skills.
7. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, results-driven environment, demonstrating adaptability and a proactive approach to challenges.
8. Experience in either mentoring or leadership and team management is required as it would be helpful for you to excel in this role.
9. Strong IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, are essential, as is your ability to quickly adapt to new systems.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £41,000. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £51,970.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on 5th January.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
We’re here to help. Ask us anything at SWRecruitment@ScottishWater.co.uk
