Looking for a new challenge?
A chance to learn new skills and receive specialist training?
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Rotherham Visual Impairment Team as a Specialist Teaching Assistant. We are looking for a person with a passion and commitment to making a difference to children’s lives.
We are a specialist team of education professionals who support Children and Young people from 0-25 years across the Rotherham Borough with a Visual Impairment. The role is focused on supporting pupils with a Visual Impairment to access their learning. This may include developing new skills (e.g. tactile, communication, specialist technology), promoting self-advocacy and striving towards independence. Another focus of support is developing social skills and promoting the wellbeing of CYP with a Vision Impairment, many of whom have additional or complex needs.
Being a VI TA is fast-paced, variable, and involves working in a range of settings. Applicants must have experience of working with children, young people, or adults with additional needs and have a person-centred approach to their work. Under the direction of a Qualified Teacher of Vision Impairment, you will support a small number of pupils across a range of settings (home, nursery, primary, secondary, and special schools). The successful candidate must be willing to work in all types of settings and with all age ranges.
You will need to be flexible, proactive, and have a positive attitude. You will put our children at the heart of everything you do; enjoy developing your skills and knowledge alongside excellent communication skills. If you are successful, you will be supported to learn any specialist skills required.
Experience/knowledge of working in school or nursery settings, both mainstream and special, is highly desirable; however, the ability to work across all settings is essential to the role.
An awareness of visual impairment would be beneficial but not essential as training will be offered to the successful candidate.
The role will involve:
* Providing direct support to pupils individually or in small groups as required.
* Offering verbal description to supplement visual information.
* Modifying tasks set by class teachers.
* Ensuring pupil safety when undertaking physical activities, practical subjects, and movement around the school campus.
* Promoting and supporting the use of assistive technology for students.
* Supporting pupils on educational visits.
* Working with children with CVI on specific visual stimulation outcomes.
* Producing large print and tactile work, reformatting textbooks and worksheets in line with the reformatting policy and seeking clarification from the resource technicians as required.
* Supporting the Vision Impairment Team and school in developing a partnership with parents.
The successful candidate should also hold GCSE (Grade 4/C) in English and Maths or equivalent and an NVQ Level 2 qualification or equivalent.
Interviews will be held on Monday 28th April 2025.
There will be a chance to find out more about the role and meet the team on Tuesday 15th April 2025, at 4:00pm. Please email: visualimpairmentteam@rotherham.gov.uk to register your interest in this session.
