Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
The respiratory medicine department provides services to the two local acute hospitals (Castle Hill Hospital and Hull Royal Infirmary), and an immediate catchment population of approximately half a million patients. For more specialised services, such as sleep related disorders, an extended population of approximately 1.2 million patients is catered for. We have recently joined services with Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana Princess of Wales Hospital. In-patient services are based on wards 37 and 500 at Hull Royal Infirmary. Ward 37 contains a six bedded Respiratory Support Unit and 14 general respiratory beds. Ward 500 has 24 general respiratory beds, inclusive of 4 cubicles for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. One Consultant will be responsible for the review of patients on each Respiratory ward, and the daily ward round will be conducted in the morning. The Consultant will have a team of junior and middle grade doctors to assist with the ward round (at least 1 SpR and 2 junior doctors). Out-patient sessions are held at the Chest Clinic in Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital, and Beverley Westwood Hospital. We have a busy academic unit with our own Clinical Trials unit. Current research interests in the department include hypoxia and pulmonary circulation, cystic fibrosis and cough reflex, ILD, asthma, palliative care in patients with chronic lung disease, and telehealth.
Main Duties of the Job
The respiratory department operates a phased working job pattern. The appointee will be on ward duty (Respiratory Ward) for 1 week (7 days) at a time on a 1:5 rota. The respiratory consultants contribute equally to a 1:11 rota for respiratory in-reach to the AAU at HRI. 1 PA is allocated for respiratory inreach duties for weekdays. The workload will be variable based on respiratory admissions to the AAU; winter months see a higher number. Respiratory Consultants are assisted by a SpR, and work can be distributed as per requirements. There will be consideration of time off in lieu (such as for weekend working). Six new patients per clinic will be booked as standard. At the start of the post, we do not anticipate follow-up patients to be booked into the clinic. In due course, when follow-up slots are required, 1 new patient slot will equate to 2 follow-up patients.
The candidate will be supporting both the Asthma and Sleep/NIV service and will be providing satellite clinics in either Grimsby or Scunthorpe for this cohort of patients. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop the CPET/Breathlessness Service.
