The cardiac PICU (CPICU) has around 400- 450 admissions per year including those who are referred for ECMO support (cardiac and respiratory). The intensive care team is an integral part of wider East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC).
The General Children’s Intensive Care Unit (CICU) has around 400 admissions per year. The CICU supports various specialities including paediatric surgery, respiratory, gastroenterology, neurology, hemato-oncology, Paediatric ENT etc. It is a part of Leicester Children’s Hospital.
Leicester is commissioned for offering both respiratory and cardiac ECMO support; it is the only centre providing paediatric and neonatal ECMO transport and is one of the busiest ECMO centres in the country.
The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust hosts the regional transport service CoMET which is based at the Midlands Critical Care Transport Hub at Castle Donnington. This new facility has the state of art simulation centre with an immersive sim suite.
· At Leicester we plan to offer a tailor made post CCT fellowship to cater to the training needs of senior fellows. They will have an opportunity to develop special interest in cardiac intensive care & ECMO.
· They will get opportunities to do fellow of the week on general and cardiac intensive care. We would offer opportunity for doing supported on calls on general PICU, Cardiac PICU, and Comet transport.
· Senior trainees will be offered opportunity to take on long term PICU patients with consultant support.
· We have a group of consultants with an interest in POCUS, advanced US guided vascular access with expertise in doing tunnelled PICC lines on the unit.
· Mentorship program with one to one support from senior PICU and ECMO consultants.
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
